Argument 200
Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients
Words 535
In the above argument, the arguer advocate(s) emphasizing advertisement on anesthetic techniques and considered(considering) staff for male clientele because they are more likely to (be)distressed than women. However, the arguer fails to reveal the real reasons for the difference between man(men) and women in the dentist’s(difference in dentist's ??? 有点不懂 该为dental disease). Neither does the author prove the necessary of the advertisements.
First of all, whether more men faint than women in the dentist’s is open to doubt. The statistic collection cited in the argument only shows the number comparison between women and man faint with no other supplementary information, such as the overall number of men and women, the proportion of faint patients, the treatment these patients had and so forth. It is possible that dental clinics in the study have many customers from nearby boys’ schools with very few female patients. It might also be the case that men are more easily to get certain dental problem(s) such as yellow teeth due to heavy smoking, physical damage by using mouth to open some beverage bottle(哈哈 幽默), which is applicable to women. Unless the backgrounds of cases in the collection are provided, hardly can we believe the validity of the study.
Secondly, even if we admitted(个人觉得用admits) the reliability of the study, the assertion that more men are likely to be distressed is suspected. Myriads of variables should be taken into consideration upon patients faint during dental work such as the healthy condition, the mood, the problems of their teeth, the kinds of operation they are having, the techniques dentists use or their attitude etc, all of which should not be neglected. Perhaps most women pay more attention to their appearance, especially their teeth, (thus)visiting dentists more often than men, even when they have little discomfort thus don’t have big problems in teeth,(不通) whereas most men go to the dentists when the serious teeth’s problem(s) encumber their work. It is also possible that women express their distress by screeching or crying which seldom happen(s) to men. Further more, we cannot eliminate faint caused by allergy due to certain chemicals which might have more severe effect in(on) men. Without related information from the above aspects, the conclusion is made in a hasty.
Moreover, whether they should emphasis(emphasize) on anesthetic technique in the advertisement campaign is doubted. There are many influencing factors determine(determining) which dentists a patient will go to, for instance, the hygiene condition, the costs and effectiveness of the treatment, the proficiency of the dentists, the convenient access, etc. Therefore, the focus of the advertisement should be considered thoughtfully and aspects people concerned most should be put in the priority. The emphasis upon the sensitivity of the staff to the patients may even give a misleading impression that their treatments are always painful. Additionally, the strategy of advertisements, the locations of the advertisement boards or the time and channels they are shown on TV would also affect a dentist’s popularity. Only with confidence in dental treatment and proper promotion strategy, can the advertisement efficaciously attract more customers.
To sum up, the argument is not well reasoned as it stands. Unless detail information upon people’s concern about dental work is provided together with backgrounds of the statistical collection, the suggestions cannot be adopted.
