143 The following appeared as a letter to the editor of a national newspaper.
In the letter, the arguer claims that recent article of a national newspaper on corporate downsizing in the United States is misleading. To support his claim, he cites the result of a recent report on the United States economy. This argument rests on only a report whose accuracy is still questioned, and therefore it is unpersuasive as it stands.
First of all, all the rationcination is based on a recent report which lacks credibility. The arguer fails to provide any details about the report, such as its truthfulness and accuracy. Even if we don’t take its credibility into consideration. In other words, we take back our doubt on the report. There are still some problems which will undermine the line of reasoning.
One of the problems is that even far more jobs have been created than have been eliminated, the arguer does not exclude the factor of increasing population. Every year many college students graduate from colleges and universities, they also must fine job to support themselves as soon as possible. Equiped with high education and newly skills, they are the winers in the battle of hunting jobs with the workers who have lost their jobs for a long time and can not catch up with the increasing requirement for new jobs. Therefore, under this circumstance, it is till very hard for those who lost their jobs to find a new job.
Another problem is that in the report it is said that many those who lost their jobs have found new employment. However, it is only a part of those people but not all of those. Perhaps, there are still many people who can not find suitable job due to their age or something else.
The last problem is about the newly created jobs which trend to pay above-average wages. Just like what I have mentioned above, how many of these jobs fall on the workers who lost their jobs for years. It is very likely that forced by the economic hardship in these years, they have ot fine other jobs which is a waste of their ability and experience to support their families. After a long period of time to do other jobs, they have been not qualified to do the newly created jobs. So, even if newly jobs are created, it is not easily available to for the poor workers.
In conclusion, before arguing with the national newspaper, the arguer must do much investigation about whether all of the workers who lost their jobs find satisfactory jobs again.
