50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."


With human knowledge accumulates at an unprecedented pace, lots of subjects we study at college become far more complex than ever. Although a few classical subjects such as math, history can be inculcated efficient to students in the traditional way without instilled in the outside working experience, the majority courses, which designed to foster the qualities of the social workers, required the teachers to acquire some work experience in the real world in order to instruct to the students in a more effective way.

Admittedly, a few traditional courses in the college such as math, history etc can be taught by the professor without any working experience in certain related fields. These classical courses, which emphasize on logic, reasoning or the evolvement process of the human society to some extent, are relatively independent from the practical world. And the professor of these fields need not work outside to gain some work experience, for only through studying the subject itself can the professor instruct the knowledge to the student effectively. Even though the professors may strive to associate these subjects with some interesting working materials, it will hard for them to find a job in the society, given the fact that there rarely exist a company that deal with math or history. Therefore, the quality of teaching traditional courses will not decrease if the professor only works in the academic world, due to these courses barely connect to any professional field of the world.  

However, as the college education is designed to cultivate the qualified future workers in the society, it is very necessary for the professors teaching certain subjects to attain professional experience in relevant field. Most college subjects are dealt with the practical world problems. Take the course called IC design which focus mainly on the design Integrate Circuit for example, it is hard to imagine the professors without any working experience in some related company can teach the course well, for the it is a very practical course and some knowledge can only get through working in the IC company. The professor with only some academic knowledge can only instruct the student some theory and the students taught by these professors may turn out to be some persons who just can deduce some formula without any ability to solve some real world problems. These persons are not qualified workers and doom to be failures in our society. So it is urgent needed for the professor teaching some subjects to work outside to get some working experience in related fields.

In addition, some courses, when combined with some working experience in the practical world, can be instructed more vividly and efficient. Although some subjects are possibly to be instructed by professors without working experience, gaining some outside working experience is also beneficial to the quality of the teaching. Students tend to be bored when inculcated constantly with only the theories. Consequently, they will lose the interests to go on studying in certain fields. This is not the result that we expect to see. Nevertheless, if the professors instill some colorful materials, which acquired through working outside, to the subjects, the students may be inspired by these shining materials and become very eager to grasp the knowledge of this subject, hence the teaching process become more efficient. As mentioned above, requiring professors of certain field attain some working experience in the practical world can improve the quality of teaching.

To sum up, exclusive of certain classical subjects, most faculty in the college are expected to working outside to get some working experience. In this way, not only the quality of teaching will be promoted, also the professor themselves will be benefit from this kind of activities, since they may grasp some knowledge that can not be learned in the academic world.
