Is the emphasis which society places on the intellect- that is on reasoning and other cognitive skills not enough as the statement says? I disagree with that, in fact, society has placed enough emphasis on the intellect, even too much.

Recognizing this point, society has placed enough emphasis on it. The evidence supporting that pointview is overwhelming, but we need look no further than the curriculum of schools. Commonsense informs us that subjects such as mathematics, physics etc turns to be efficient to train students' intellect. Nowadays, those subjects have become the compulsory subjects of most secondary schools and universities. What's more, in the entrance examinations of university and post graduates, the candidates are required to take part in the examination of those subjects. Besides, in the employment market, the individuals with high intellect are popular. They succeed hunting many attractive jobs, such as engineers, lawyers etc, which provide them handsome wage and high status. The foregoing scenario reveals that society has placed much emphasis on intellect.

Admittedly, intellect is important to the society, but we should not overestimate its value, at least, solely rely on intellect we can not to fulfill the development of society. Society consists of individuals, a vital society consists of well-rounded individuals. Evidently, not only does a well-round people need brilliant intellect, but also does he or she need non-intellect skills. Actually, intellect such as reasoning and cognitive skill is not unique for human beings. As every one knows computers also have strong intellect-artifical intellect which, as for reasoning and cognitive, is superior to human beings’. A computer named Deep Blue which was exploited by IBM, for example, beat the reigning champion Garry Kasparov. But why computer fails to take place human beings hitherto? The reason lies in human beings’ non-intellect skills.  In the history of the science, many significant discoveries derived from some imagination or casual inspiration, for example, Newton correlated the moon and a falling apple, which provided him the inspiration for the theory of universal gravitation. Nevertheless, nowadays, the education emphasize the ability of logical reasoning but not make effort to cultivate students’ non-intellect skills.

To sum up, society especially education has place enough emphasis on the intellect. Actually, mere the intellect can not fulfill the development of human beings, rather, non-intellect skills take a considerable role in the development of the human beings. In order to cultivate well-rounded people, we must strike a good balance between the intellect and non-intellect skills.
