Issue 147
Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.

Outline:
1.        Tradition is part of our history, it reflects our culture and believes and stick to tradition would help us reserve charitable characters.
2.         Modernization is the products of our developing technology which bring us convenience and comfortable which is also indispensible in our life.
3.        We should find a balance to have both tradition and modernization.

Words: 616

Not until I arrive at the front of the library do I realize that it is closed since it is Dragon Boat Festival today. Thanks to the online renewal system, I can extend my time holding the books without paying overdue charges. It feels so wonderful to have a day off and continue with my readings, spending my day with benefits from both traditions and modernizations.

Traditions, evolved along with our history, reflect our culture and represent its myriads of charitable characters whose continuation would benefit social harmony and improvement of the whole society. This point can be better illustrated by comparing each one of us from the society with a little screw from a machine. In order to let the machine exerts its functions, coordination from all its components becomes the pre-requisite. Similarly, for the development of the society, respect, co-operation and understanding are needed and provided by virtues from traditions. For example, the traditional story of Kongrong taking smaller pear for himself, leaving the bigger pears to his parents indicates the merits of respect for old and love for the young and the well manner of humility. As the traditions passing by together with the story from generations to generations, these characters are also widely spread. Thus, it may not exaggerate to say that traditions contribute to the constitution and maintenance of our moral standards in today's society.

On the other hand, modernization, with sheering development of innovative technologies and emerging of convenient products, brings us a more comfortable life and becoming more and more indispensible in our life. With the high-speed train, we could commute between cities to go to work; with the easy access to the Internet, we could exchange ideas with each other more frequently and more efficiently; with wide spread usage of air-conditioners, we would not worried about the outside weather too much. To this extent, our life depends more and more on products from modernization. Although it is true that the requirement of fast speed in the process of modernization may need us to do more work. At the same time, it provides us a more colorful and pleasant life we may have not imagined before: talk to each other through cell phone whenever you like, get the most updated news from the televisions once any events occurs and so forth. Our life calls for such modernization, we create the modernization ourselves and our society will keep the modernization to step forward.

Given the essential roles of both traditions and modernizations, we should take advantages of them and make the balance to let them become compatible in our life. Actually, there are no mutual exclusive forces between tradition and modernization, with each having their own merits as illustrated above. With suitable adjustment, they could co-exist with each other quite well. For instance, in Hong Kong, you can easily find people still stick to traditions to visit a grave on Ching Ming festival which are gradually disappearing elsewhere, at the same time you can get expedient access and wide spread of high-tech products. One step forward, you may see people petition for good luck in temples, whereas one step backward, you enter the subway which brings you to the city central in no time with traditions and modernizations supporting each other. Therefore, as long as we keep an open mind and being thankful, we could have both traditions and modernizations.

Taken together, it may safe for us to draw a conclusion that both traditions and modernizations are needed in our life. Either of them have positive roles to boost the development of our society. With proper planning and understanding, we could live with a world with both traditions and modernizations.
