TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."
This memo contend that the company should discontinue stocking some imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses to improve profits. Close scrutiny of each of the facts mention above, I found the author is unconvincing for several reasons.
To begin with, the good selling of cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin do not indicates that the commons prefer domestic cheeses to imported cheese, or that they can earn enough money when the chain stores reduce the imported cheese as usual. Perhaps the cheddar cheeses happens to popularity at the moment, or inexpensive compared to other types of cheese. Or perhaps the cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin are popular, but the other types of domestic cheeses are bad selling than imported ones. If it is the case, the author cannot assure cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin can make a great profits for long, let alone that other domestic cheeses can sells well. Moreover, the arguer only cites the good sale of the newest store is unwarranted. Maybe the company exploited market in the same area last year, and the best-selling is caused by local preference. Without rulling other possible reasons of the good selling the author cannot convinced me that commons prefered domestic cheeses than before, or that the domestic cheeses can replace some imported ones.
In addition, as for the survey that the article cites, an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among readers of Cheeses of the World magazine do not nessarily reflect the market demand of the domestic cheeses can assure enough profit of the company. In order to evaluate the evidence of the survey, I wonder the subscribers statistically representative of the overall population of some people who is the customer of the chain company? If the magazine is a local one, such as only be published in the area mention above, the survey support less to the memo. Moreover, even if the survey is credible, it is highly possible that domestic cheeses are unpopular beforetime, and the increasing tendency is not great enough to creat profit. It is equally possible that the fans of imported cheese is a great group of the consumers, reducing imported cheese may cause a result that losing such a group.
Even though the consumers of the compony has tendency choosen domestic cheeses, limited inventory does not promise improvement in profits. The memo provides no information about the costs involved in manufacturing and distributing and the like. The reducing expenses by limiting inventory might be insufficient in number to ensure a profit for the store. And it is equally possible that the cost of transportation of domestic cheeses is much greater than that in stocking. Furthermore, although limiting inventory is effective, perhaps there is a lot of competition in the area that cannot assure they can improve profit. In short, without more information about supply, demand, and transit cost of demotics cheeses, it is impossible to determine whether the company can earn a profit from discontinuing stocking imported many of varieties of cheese and concentrating primarily on domestic cheeses.
In conclusion, this argument relies on certain doubtful assumptions and unwarranted evidence that render it fails to substantiate his assertion. To validate it, further investigation and analysis are needed. To better evaluate the argument I would need to know the reason of best-selling of domestic of the new chain stores, the arguer would provide clear evidence that limiting inventory is helpful to improve profits. Additionally, to strengthen the argument we would need more information about the survey of magazine.
