ISSUE 207
Rituals and ceremonies play a very important role in the culture of a society or a group. Its multifarious forms also indicate the various characteristics, and distinct different culture from different society or group. Whit the trends of cultural assimilation and, some rituals and ceremonies that belonged to a certain culture become common to people of different cultures, even some of them disappear from the society. However, it doesn’t mean that the sense of culture diminished.
Admittedly, traditional rituals and ceremonies can protrude the characteristics of the culture, and can help to preserve cultural identity. Some rituals and ceremonies were deriving from an ancient time, and pass down to today, they have already become a part of culture, even are the basic part. These rituals and ceremonies and social morality fuse together and have been deeply planted in people’s mind. We can consider them as a core of culture under some circumstance; hence, they indicate the characteristics of the culture, even at some times, they can define the culture. For example, in China, Chinese spring festival is a very important and solemn ceremony of the year, Chinese people have a same celebrate plan in these days, and each celebration has its unique meaning, and embodies Chinese people’s sense of morality and value. Consequently, Chinese government is trying to apply Chinese Spring Festival for cultural inheritance.
However, rituals and ceremonies is not the only means of preserving cultural identity. Culture is very general idea, and it contain so many meaning that can not represented only by rituals and ceremonies, furthermore, culture also has some abstract aspects that concrete rituals and ceremonies can not indicating. A example can make this point more clear, we can get a general idea for a culture through the dress of the people who belong to the culture, we also can understand a culture by read the book, or watch the documentary films about the culture but not only though its rituals and ceremonies.
Consequently, without some rituals and ceremonies will not diminish the sense of culture. As the developing of science and technoledge, the trend of globalization become more and more evident, and the trend of cultural assimilation and also become unstopping. Furthermore, we don’t have to resist this trend. Depend on the premise of not to discard our traditional rituals and ceremonies, and retain our own cultural essence, afterwards, try to absorb the marrow of other cultures to enrich our culture, then cultural assimilation and will not engender a negative effect but make our culture more colorful and meaningful.
In sum, rituals and ceremonies is a important part of a culture, but it can not totally represent the cultural identity. The best way to preserving the sense of the culture should be enrich the culture unceasingly. |
