题目:ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
字数:601 日期:2007-7-16
Does the method children socialized determine the destiny of society? Have not human find out a way to raise children to bring about a better society? The speaker asserts so. Yet I disagree with this statement, in two respects. First, socialization is only one reason that has impact on children and the destiny of society. Secondly, the empirical cases have demonstrated that we are embracing a better society, which is totally contrary with the statement of the speaker.
It is difficult to deny the fact that socialization of children has an important affect on one's growth, thereby influencing the destiny of society. To see how children are socialized nowadays, we just have a glance at the playground. By participating a variety of activities, most children there get the knowledge how to cooperate, negotiate and get along with others, as well as compete with them. What these activities bring to them are not only the healthy body and spirit, love for life, motivation to win the game, skills of group work, but also all the materials these children need to grow into adults, both physical and intellectual. A society filled with well socialized people- with lower criminal rate, safer living environment, and a better legal system-- stands everything to gain.
Nevertheless, how children are socialized is rarely the key reason to determine one society's destiny. History supports this statement. Consider, for example, China's chief architecher Deng Xiaoping who spent most of teenage period in France. Outside the main socialized environment of China, as an excellent law student abroad, Deng knew little or even nothing about the situation in China then. Yet later he became one of the greatest leaders in China , proposed Open and Reform Policy, which changed the whole Chinese economic and political situation dramatically. Or, consider one of the greatest inventor Edison who was brought up by his mother. Without conventional education of school, little Edison, who perhaps had not enjoyed the similar happy childhood as his counterparts, in another word, may not be well socialized, eventually became one of the most prominent figures in history by bring human electrical light as well as countless other inventions. Therefore, it is clear that how to socialize children is not the sole factor to affect them, thus failing to be the fundamental reason to determine the destiny of society.
The second problem with the statement that empirical cases prove that we are facing a better society. There maybe some different opinions about how to define the 'better' society. If we view a more harmonious world as better, I believe world is indeed becoming better. In contemporary society, not only does modern technology of intercommunication shortens physical distance among people, but also makes our earth a more safe and harmonious place to live. Living in the village of earth, though we may confront conflicts of civilization, bondage of languages, diversity of personal value system as well as differenced of race and religious believes, we are pleased to see that people are becoming more reasonable, generous and so-called 'more human'. Global cooperation on may common problems, such as the green gas problem, water pollution, deforestation, starvation, diseases and war, have achieved several accomplishments, thereby improving human's living environment.
In conclusion, neither does how children are socialized determine the destiny of society , nor we do not know how to raise children to create a better society. The speaker's statement is specious and without demonstration of real cases. After all, we are embracing and creating a better world, in which children are better raised to look forward a more brilliant future of human race. |
