TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
WORDS: 404 TIME: 00:37:06 DATE: 2007-7-21 11:01:59
The speaker claims that all faculty should be required to work outside the academic world in professions relevant to what they teach to improve the quality of instruction of their colleges and university. In my view, to work outside academic world does serve to improve the quality of education, however, it cannot be applied to all fields.
To begin with, for some certain subjects, the working experience of the teacher serves to the combination of the theoretical education and the practical social working, which promotes the education significantly. Firstly, those faculty who have worked outside academia can illustrate boring principles discussed on the textbooks with practical examples. Students must be interested in those examples happening in the real-world, which makes them ensure that what they are learning can be applied into real world, but not only be discussed in the textbooks ideal world. Therefore, with the working experience, a teacher can easily attract the attention of students, making the education more effective and efficient.
Secondly, teachers, who have worked outside academia in professions relevant to the courses they teach, have more far-touched influence on their students' job hunting in the future. An irrefutable fact is that the students' purposes of studying in a university are to find a good job when they come to society. By working outside academia, a teacher learned what kind of people the society needs. Imparting this information into students, the teacher can point out a clear direction for students to improve themselves, which makes them be superior to others in the competition in the future.
Moreover, even to the faculty themselves, those working experience are precious. During the work time, a professor can catch on the most exigent demands of the society in this field, upon which his decision of the new research direction depends. In that kind of cases, the result of the research can be much more practical and worthy than that they investigate solely in university.
However, not faculty in all the fields need practical working experience, such as humanity, arts, philosophy, since there is no meaningful works waiting them to do in society. The time they spending on working might be more beneficial when it is used to do the research in their academia.
In sum, working outside the academia in professions relevant to the courses they teach can improve the quality of those faculty's teaching, but it is not always true in all the fields. |
