In my opinion, it is a little bit difficult to compare the importance of imagination and knowledge in professions and academic fields in general. They are both significant to the research. However, the imagination is more significant than knowledge to a good researcher.
First of all, without a lot of knowledge, one can not be creative. To be a good researcher, one has to study for nearly 20 years to handle enough general knowledge and some specific knowledge. Most of the scientists today, have the Ph.D degree. The basic knowledge of every field could make them creative in their research. And the professional knowledge of his field are much useful in his field. For example, no matter what one do, he must research on that field what the formers have done. He must analysis the flaws and the advantage of the formers' works, and then he could have his own ideas. As a researcher, he must read large amount of papers. Without reading the papers, one easily does something others have done and make the same mistakes the formers’ have made. Only through reading the papers, one can find the creative points and what the formers have not done before. So without enough knowledge it is difficult to be a researcher.
However, only handling the knowledge and reading the others’ papers are not enough to be a good researcher in the professions and academic fields. A lot of researchers have read the papers of the formers', but only a few researchers could make revolution of that field. The imagination plays a significant role in the process. To be creative one has to be the first one noticing the flaws of the past or noticing some new phenomenon. For example, only the first one creates the telephone could be remembered in the history. Nobody knows who is the second one create the telephone, and it is useless to do the works others have done in the academic field. If one wants to be a good researcher, he must do something creative in that field. Just handle the knowledge of the formers' is not enough.
But only has the imagination is also not enough to a researcher in most professions and academic fields. If one do not have the fundamental knowledge of the field and only wants to be creative in the fields, he can not work out a good result. Moreover, perhaps he would waste his own time and money to do the works others have done or the works others have substantiated can not be worked out. So every university needs a student to provide his scores in the exams before to reflect the handling of the knowledge of the student. Without a good background, one is also difficult to be a good researcher.
In sum, the imagination and knowledge are both significant to a researcher. The comparison of them is difficult, and one has to handle both of them at the same time. In the field of academic the knowledge is the base of imagination, and the imagination developed from the knowledge.
