ISSUE 208--"The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

I fundamentally agree with the speaker's broad claim that the way people look, dress, and act is a mirror image of their attitudes and interests, which further reveal the social ideas and values. However, In my opinion, the speaker generalizes too hastily without considering the situation in oppressed societies or in some other respects the habits and customs of people's appearance and behavior are not accurate indicators of their attitudes and values-which should be discussed in a more detailed analysis.

I concede that the speaker is on the correct philosophical side of this issue. After all, the way people dress and act could, more or less, expose their attitudes and interest. On one side, in most circumstances, people are inclined to choose clothes and fashion styles according to their yearning life style and to their appetite and interests. For example, people who favor classical literature in China might be apt to dress cheongsam, while people who favor Hip-Pop fashion might tend to wear baggy jeans slung low along the waist. Yet, in the notion of the manner in which people behave also lies my first contention with the speaker who neglects a crucial distinction in oppressed societies. That is, in some autocratic societies, where people display a panoply of rituals, behaviors, and manners of dress for their oppressors not for their individuality and own attitudes--such as in old China, the speaker's claim is thus to be unilateral and arbitrary.

Turning next to the dictation function of the people's behavior and appearance on social rituals and values, I have to admit that certain aspects of the outward appearance and behavior of a culture's people do inform us of their hidden social values and disciplines. Firstly, people's dressing can be the clear illustration of the social criteria of aesthetics. Chinese people would like to dress themselves formally under most circumstances in order to show their sobriety and moderation. Americans prefer anything that could express their individuality and diversity. The French, who are prestigious for their romantic dispositions, are famous for their impressive fashion style in their explicit way of expressing love. Judging from this aspect, we could tell about specific nation's aesthetic appetite by their inclination in dressing. Secondly, the behavior of people also reveals what the society encourages and advocates. There is a telling example to bolster this point. As we all know, the sense of gentlemanly conduct is the symbol of British, which originated from the Industrial Revolution. Since the behavior of high moral quality of good breeding beyond the law makes a person positively involved in the community, the tradition of gentlemanly behavior preserves and becomes the indication of British.

In spite of the fact that people's habits, rituals and dressing styles do provide signals about social values, we should be circumspect that defining social attitudes only by public behavior and appearance might result in misunderstanding and confusion. Because people in a society are divided into various groups by status, interests, consanguinity and political view, each would exert a distinguishing or even reverse value system in behavior and appearance. If we wrongly choose one group of people to identify a society, we will go astray with no doubt. Therefore, when it comes to the fundamental elements of the value of a society which seems to be complex and vague--such as moral disciplines--which require a continuously observation and study, we need to rely on other respects like historical records and other statistical evidence to indicate the overall characteristic of these elements.

To sum up, while the statement has merit, it amounts to an unfair generalization, for the reason that the speaker fails to take the way into account that people look, dress and act belie their true attitudes and values in oppressed societies. Besides, when it comes to the definition of social values, only considering the factor of people's behavior and appearance might be misleading unless we study by a case-by-case analysis.

For example, people who favor classical literature in China might be apt to dress cheongsam. In China people who favor cheongsam, a traditional Chinese clothing, which is akin to American jeans, creates an sense of advocating classical literature.

For instance,Americans prefer anything that could express their individuality and diversity. Those who highly advocate individuality and diversity, such as American, directly influence the world to put emphasis on developing  individuality and diversity.

(可能我眼界不够开阔)感觉the life style they long for更好些。
