Issue207Ritualsand ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups ofpeople have a diminished sense of who they are.
When we take a close look at the history ofculture, we will find that different culture has their own characteristicrituals and ceremonies that help define them. However, as technology progresseslead to globalization, rituals and ceremonies are tending to be hybrid, andthen such notable contribution to defining culture is passing. Even withoutthem, we can still maintain our sense of who we are.
It istrue that rituals and ceremonies will reflect people’s beliefs, thoughts, tastes, thus can tell a foreigner something about that society’s culture. From the adventruous and fierce bullfightceremony which is full of whoops, applause and laughter, we can touch the valiancy, cordiality andhospitality aspect of Spanish culture. Also, from the white dominant tone, delicate coupdemarriage and beautiful wedding armosre on the French wedding rituals, we can feel the romantic element in the French culture. (这个例子会不会有些不到位呢?没有具体指出哪些元素)In addition, the family union ceremony of China’smoon day reflects the deep filial piety spirit in Chinese culture. And we alsoknow, specifically, the atmosphere of freedom through America’s presidential candidate ceremonies and in augurations of presidents.
However, along with the proceeding of globalization, somerituals and ceremonies are becoming more and more internationalization, thus can’t represent any instinct feature of their culture and define culture as well as they did in the past.(加上一句,这样就不能起到define的作用了) Take the Christmas Day for example, nowadays countriesin Asia such as Japan, India and China start celebrate this festivaljust like some west countries where the Christmas Day used to be distinctive intheir culture. However, in these Asian countries, the Christmas Day is notrelated to religion any more, but just a joyful feast to enjoy union of familyand friends. Another example is the Saint Valentine's Day. In the past, the SaintValentine's Day was a special ceremony merely in Christianity world, and embodiedequality, free and loyalty in the Christian culture. But now it becomes aromantic feast prevailing all over the world. Its religionary color of Christianity fades, and function of helping defining Christian culture is weakened.
Inaddition, as the factors contributing to defining culture are far more than ritualsand ceremonies, even if there is no ritual and ceremony exit in this world, wecan still comprehend our culture and understand ourselves. Perhaps we can getenough information about our culture and our nation from piles of books andmovies in which there are so many stories of our ancestors and development ofour society. Also, we can visit the museums where are abound with exhibit recording development at different stagesin our history. We even can hear the developing process of our culture from theelder family members who have a more comprehensive understanding about ourculture as well as a far deeper realization of self. Thus, we can get to knowwho we are in the cultural background without rituals and ceremonies.
In sum, rituals and ceremonies indeed help define a culture, but their function is being weakened because of the globalization. However, without them,we can keep recognizing ourselves as well as before in that sole rituals andceremonies are not the key factor in defining culture.
