In any realm of life—whether academic, social, business, or political—the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options.

Which is more essential to success, pragmaticism or idealism, the author chose the former only, which I could not get accordance in. In my opinion, both the two are equally essential to the success, and situation varies different in realms.

In science, which idealism and pragmaticism both lead to success, both interact each other, and only rely on both of them could achieve success. Neither mere idealism nor mere pragmaticism will bring benefits. On one hand, pragmaticism should depend on idealism as a direction, which could provide more imagination and ideals to pragmaticism. Consider if without Plato and Socrates, how poor we would in thought now. On the other hand, idealism must rely on pragmaticism to prove and test its ideas, and modify itself. Although, sometimes it need one side to compromise to the other, in order to make academic study and research more convenient and more realistic. Consider the law of conservation of momentum, constrained in a closed system, which do not exit in the world with the pragmatic view, but if the outside force's influence is very small and could be overlooked, which is an idealistic view, we may use this theory to solve many proper problems in our lives. So, bearing the relationship between the two will benefit in science, make more discoveries and more application in realistic.

In commerce, pragmaticism plays more essential roles, which need idealism as well. Sometimes, for commerce fight is as well as military fight, idealism seems too simple and too immediate to rely on while pragmaticism could emphasis more. However, we could deny the idealism's function in commerce. Consider in the programming of blueprint, if we only resort to pragmaticism, we may lose the faith and confidence to make our future better, while without the pragmaticism our ideals could only became illusion.  Additional, we the commercialists should spread every effort to make our products to be the idealistic products of the customers, which could not be separated from the pragmaticism. Consequently, in business, through their interaction, we could make more profits and improve the social productivity.

In society, every individual is operated by these two, as a combination, and then the society is a combination as well. On one side, we all make our best to realize our ideal while restrain by the society’s pragmaticism, although sometimes the society do not give us enough choice. But in fact our ideal is not as simple as the choice that the society provides to us, and could not be replaced by them. On the contrary, the whole society’s ideal is constrained by our pragmaticism likewise. Only when the two powers balance each other, as we could sacrifice the few individuals’ ideals to realize majority’s, which is the same as the society’s. But all these need the impulse of the pragmaticism.

In politics, sometimes, the idealism is a tool to achieve the faith of the public, as a somewhat political method. Some individuals claim their political ideals, so as to obtain supports form the public, but when he achieve to serve the public, he will not follow his promise. Only the ones who take this political ideal as their own individual’s ideal, just like Lincoln, Martin Luther King could do the most excellent to the society. So, in politics, people do not need the idealism, no matter how flashy it is, they need the progress to make the ideal to fact through pragmaticism.

So, as a conclusion, which maybe suit to all realms, the relationship between idealism and pragmaticism, just like a comparison followed. Idealism is the wing of pragmaticism, which without it, pragmaticism could only crawl in the street, while, pragmaticism is the feet of idealism, which without it, idealism could not even crawl in the world. They both essential to humans, in any realm, however, the situation varies different, which is more essential.

要说问题的话，就是读完第一遍有点懵，说理部分很充分，很辩证，但例子有点少了，影响了论证的效果。
