Are only experts’ critical judgments useful and vital to any work in the given field, as the speaker asserts? However, I tend to disagree. While I concede that opinions from experts hold significant value and important, views of public and people whose professions are not related to the given[field]are also valuable in almost all endeavors although in different fields the value and use varies.
First turn to the arena of politics. In a democratic society the opinion of public are in most cases more important and determining than many politicians and political critics that we usually consider professional. It is undeniable that views of experts in politics, such as sorts of political `d[?] out judgment from people play a crucial, if not most influencing, role. [感觉这句话放在这不太合适,既然本段TS是要论述公众的作用,没必要在中间插上一句来让步,否则前后有些不搭,断开了的感觉。可以在最后来个让步段的时候再说]The public judgment influences the politics in two ways. One is that public opinion can often determine the fulfillment of policies or strategies that are not compulsory. For instance, while government or politicians encourage parents to send their children to public schools, parents who show different attitudes are more likely to make their kids attend private school and when most parents do like this then the policy may be failed.[第一种方式是公众的意见经常可以决定那些非强制的政策或者方针的实行。但是这个上学的例子我觉得不是很恰当地体现出了这一点] The other way lies in that the mind of public may directly determine the career and position of politicians who make policies by voting and many politicians are removed for their unpopular policies that are not very likely to be continued by those successors. By this way judgment done by public shows great influence on politics.
In fields of sciences and technology where the speaker’s assertion seems to hold much merit, judgment from general public are still influencing, although its impact may not be as powerful as in politics. I fundamentally agree with the speaker that only critical judgment from expert is valuable to the given field where any judgment require basic knowledge and understanding. For example, the theory of relativity of time and space, theories about evolution, or laws in genetics can not be understood by most people because they are too far from our empirical experiences. Any judgment about these theories or discoveries from general public have little or no influence at all, the job of judging these works can only left to those experts. But not all scientific developments have nothing to do with general publics, especially those research aimed at commercial application. The responsibility of scientists and engineers is to develop new technology, and whether the technology or product can be successful are greatly determined by customers who are usually not experts in the field. Auto-makers can develop new a [a new car]car with latest and most advanced equipments, but if customer do not like it, then the product are destined to failure. So opinions of general public can also influence many work in the area of science and technology.[good!]
When with respect to arts, the situation is no less complex and it is tempting to admit that critical judgment can only be done by article critics, but the fact is public opinion have much more importance. If art is merely defined as a certain skill, then speaker’s claim is valid and outsiders can not make valuable judgment. But it is not the case, there are many goals of art, of which I think by way of expressing the emotion of artist themselves to impress those who watch or listen to the works of art ranks first. Then to judge whether a work is meaningful and impressing rely more on personal emotion and feeling than acquired knowledge about art. Consider, for example, those greatest masterpieces in history of art can all give everyone a deep impression regardless of background knowledge and in turn it is the general public, not critics, that give these works the position and fame they deserve. So in endeavor of arts, opinions of layman are more significant than insiders.
To sum up, although the speaker’s assertion has merit to some extent that judgment from experts have value, ideas of layman are also important and in fields of politics and arts opinions from general public are more influencing than those from experts.
