TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
WORDS: 631          TIME: 00:55:00          DATE: 2007-7-25 22:43:59
WORDS 663 modified
As the artists and critics seem to coexist ever since they appeared in the history of human culture, who actually gives the lasting value of the society? There is no doubt that only artists are doing the seemingly creative work, and the critics have no direct relationships with the lasting value. However, deeply, if we think of how they affect each other, they both contributed to something that of lasting value.
Firstly, just as the author conceded, the artists, directly, give the society the lasting value. In fact, if we recall several respects of art-no matter from novels, music or paintings; there are plenty examples to back up the point. By reading novels of Mark Twine, we can enjoy his humor and get insightful view of places described in it. Through Beethoven's symphony, we can regain courage and be inspired, from the Potato Eaters, which regarded as one of Van Gogh's greatest works; we can feel the strong emotion that the artist wanted to express. By conveying insightful thought of artists or imparting the sense of beauty, art, in all these form, are considered cultural treasure and are passed down from generation to generation. Through such process, the artists create lasting value.
However, the part that artist played in the issue doesn't hinder critics from contributing to the lasting value. Critics, based on the works of artists, can do far more work then we once thought. Firstly, by judging the works of artists, critics help guide the ordinary people to appreciate such relatively abstract form of creations. No one will deny that in realms of art, considerable numbers of artists are initially accepted by the major of critics, and then the mass. This is quite easy to understand, in eyes of ordinary people, critics are expert in such realms and their judgments are more or less reasonable. However, maybe some detractors will argue that in such a progress critics might do a counterproductive job by making the false judgment, for example, Van Gogh, the famous painter cited in the paragraph above, is devalued by his contemporary critics, and actually received little fame in his life time. However, if we consider the case in a longer term, who rediscovered the value lying in his paintings? Before his paintings were widely accepted, who spoke highly of his contributions? After he dead, who made his name household and appreciate his works as treasure? The answer is nothing but the critics. Although there might be prejudices initially, in most cases, the critics finally come to relatively fair judgment of these works. So, anyhow, no matter how long it takes, in such a course they help the ordinary people to appreciate the works and finally add up to the lasting value of a society.
Secondly, by arguing the flaws in works of art and appreciating the merits of them, critics bring in  new perspectives to artists, which help artists to improve, to redefine and to rediscover the value of works, then finally help artists contributes more to the lasting value. To demonstrate, if we compare an artist to a car, then the function of critics serve as the rear-view mirrors of it, they tell whether although without the two mirrors the car can still go forward, but by judging from the rear-view mirror, the car can go in a safer way. First artists create and then critics judge them, and finally artists adapt; by such feedback mechanism the art paces in a more reasonable way, and this helps the artists create more of the lasting value.(类比论证的条理还要加强)
In summary, artists are undoubtedly the fundamental of creating the lasting value. But if we consider the interplay between the artists and critics, if we study the influences of critics on ordinary people, we can clear find the importance of critics when it comes to the lasting value of a society. In fact, to some extent the coexistence of these two can already implicates the rationality of critics, just as what we’ve discussed above.

例子不好找,后面几段都是空手套白狼,伤心....

Firstly, just as the author conceded(concede 的语气有勉强的意思,但作者好像没有这意思), the artists, directly, give the society the lasting value. Critics, based on the works of artists, can do far more work thenthan we once thought. However(前一句才用是不是有些重复?), if we consider the case in a longer term, who rediscovered the value lying in his paintings? Before his paintings were widely accepted, who spoke highly of his contributions? After he dead, who made his name household and appreciate his works as treasure? The answer is nothing but the critics. Although there might be prejudices initially, in most cases, the critics finally come to relatively fair judgment of these works. So, anyhow, no matter how long it takes, in such a course they help the ordinary people to appreciate the works and finally add up to the lasting value of a society.
Secondly,(这个secondly 好像是在和前面的firstly那段对应,但是结构应该是和上一段对应吧?) by arguing the flaws in works of art and appreciating the merits of them, critics bring in  new perspectives to artists, which help artists to improve, to redefine and to rediscover the value of works, then finally help artists contributes more to the lasting value.
