38. "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
Whether watching television amounts to reading books on absorbing learning depends on the definition of learning scope. In some fields, television can provide more vivid, and lively graphic images for better and more learning, while in some other areas, television can not be commensurate to books in view of intellectual development and knowledge-obtaining and knowledge-absorbing process.
Admittedly, with the advent of television, almost all age brackets of people are obsessed in watching television in that abundant pictures sufficiently display a fantastical imagination of personally going through the situations and provides large numbers of diverse cultural customs and mores distinguished from their own, flourishing industrial improvement and characteristic unlike, which is actually a substitute of books. In addition, based on modern telecommunication advancement with full speed, television can also transmit long-range classes worldwide just like we were in the university classroom and real-time, fresh and accurate information from different locations which maybe appears just before 5 minutes in remote cities, which reading books never emulates. In fact, just because various information television brings about, rather than reading books, we learn and recognize we are different individuals sharing the same earth.
However, we can not underestimate the importance of reading books simultaneously. A recent research from the University of Kansas, a major comprehensive research and teaching university, may be indirectly illustrated for indispensable reading books. Over a long period assumption that children who listen to reading books from their parents improve the language skills and intellectual development, a University of Kansas researchers justify the assumption, which could be a lateral criterion for evaluating the importance of reading books.
In addition, it is by reading book that everyone, including me, obtains basic knowledge better for future boarder and intensive research and essential skills and abilities to efficient interpersonal-communication, such as mathematic formulations, native language expression and improvement for formal written patterns, survival in complex competition. Only in reading books can we ruminate the nature of human beings, the significance of existence, and the value of struggling in sharp contrast to the one-way crazy inertia just on the screen of television. Moreover, we can benefit greatly from reading books almost through our whole lives with the appearance of television. Obsession in reading books is utterly different from watching television: reading books is largely active absorbing, while watching television is passive, mainly a passive reception; numerous classic books regarding arts and science is impressive on molding our perfect personality while bulk information television provide often is so onerous for picking up as to our idly switching one channel to another and another; one may achieve great success only by reading books while it is never heard that somebody gains his/her achievements just by watching television,no reading books. Although television can transmit real-time and the latest information, it never prepares us with enough time for consideration and further deeper digestion-if necessarily. Just reading can do this function!
Summarily, in the process of learning, watching television and reading books can both be beneficial, notwithstanding in different facet of emphasis. Watching television is more important when graphic surroundings, transmition real-time information from other areas more needed, while reading books overweigh watching television in active absorption, rumination of complex minds in arts and science, better consummating personality.
