140.The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."
Evaluating that excellent teaching and research abilities of professor Thomas based on the two facets presented above, The arguer suggests strongly that professor Thomas should be provided a higher salary rising by $10,000 and promoted to Department Chairperson for fear of the leave of professor Thomas from Elm City University. The argument, however, is suffering from many flaws and drawbacks due to misapprehending the limitations of teaching and research abilities and excessive anxiety of something which maybe never appears.
First of all, the arguer falsely focuses the abilities of teaching and research narrowly on measly and insignificant particulars which cannot be directly conducive to judge the excellent capabilities. Therefore, other possible alternatives to assessing one's teaching and research abilities in one university must be provided to strengthen the judgment. In terms of teaching ability, numerous standards based largely on assorted reflections from students may be included, such as improvement in learning abilities of overall students, personable teaching characteristic in class, earnest and responsible attitude in directing different groups in view of ranked performance and which actually are practical as criteria rather than that professor Thomas's classes are among the largest at the university which cannot be justified as her popularity gained from students. In addition, the argument that the money professor Thomas has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years cannot also show her research ability. It is highly possible that there is an increasing expansion nationwide in while science research realm, especially biological fields, consequently large quantities of money from research grants is distributed to biology-related research with obvious inclination. On the other hand, excellent research ability links straightly to outstanding research results, and identification from the same research field and accordingly astonishing rewards in common sense, the arguer, however, provides no such self-evident evidences, and therefore unpersuasive.
Subsequently, the arguer recommends that professor Thomas receives a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson. Even if we acknowledge that professor Thomas has excellent teaching and research abilities presented above, however, the arguer has still made unwarranted assumptions as follows:(1) a $10,000 raise is the best way, no other ways such as accommodating a more convenient and comfortable apartment or a sporty car which may be much more attractive for professor Thomas, to reward for her teaching and research abilities; (2)professor Thomas is willing to be promoted Department Chairperson and she is the most suitable person for Department Chairperson in the whole university; (3) there cannot be negative effects on teaching and research performance of professor Thomas as Department Chairperson due to onerous, labor-consuming and therefore prone-to-distraction task of a leader. If the arguer had provided sufficient evidences to convince us of these assumptions, the argument might be a little persuasive, at least on this facet. Unfortunately, the argument indicates none and thus unconvincing..
Finally, no evidences indicate the fear that professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another city would come true, on the other hand, the argument presented seems to show that professor Thomas is intentionally for the higher salary and promotion to be in the Elm City University for 17 years. However, it is high likelihood that professor Thomas will continually engage in Elm City University for a longer time with personal emotions of love, familiarity, and loyalty in that university built over 17 years, even if no other raise in salary and promotion. Moreover, considerating the higher teaching popularity and better research conditions, if admitted, professor Thomas is probably disposed to work in her original university out of identification and well-developed atmosphere better for her own improvement.
In conclusion, the argument has several flaws as discussed above. The argument would be substantiated by providing sufficient evidences that may convince us of professor Thomas’s better teaching and research abilities, which is considerate determiner for following conclusions. It could be further strengthened by providing significant evidences to evaluate professor Thomas as Department Chairperson, and also affirming that the fear will happen actually.

147.The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."
1:这个调查中的所设置的问题存在不足,只问最重要的特征,lifelike graphics只是游戏里的一个方面
2:lifelike graphics
