题目:ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

In this argument, the speaker concludes that university should raise Pro. Thomas's salary in order to prevent her leaving Elm City University. To support his conclusion, the speaker points out students' amount joining Pro. Thomas's classes and her bringing much money for school by research grants. Although the speaker's reasoning seems to be appealing, we may still find out that this argument rests on an unsubstantiated assumption, and is therefore unpersuasive as it stands.
First, the speaker unfairly assumes that Pro. Thomas is quite popular among students. In this argument, the mere fact that her classes are among the largest at the university is not sufficiently to prove Pro. Thomas's popularity. It is totally possible that her classes are those necessary ones every student are required to join in. Or, perhaps Pro. Thomas is such a strict professor who cannot bear any students to miss any of her classes, otherwise absent ones would fail in these classes. If so, it is quite reasonable why so many students attend her classes, because none of them afford to fail in examinations- which provides no evidence to demonstrate Pro. Thomas's popularity.
Secondly, the mere fact that Pro. Thomas in last 2years has brought more money of research grants to university than her salary does not necessarily lead to the conclusion that they grant her a raise and promotion to avoid her leaving. There is no denying the fact that the most important quality of a teacher is whether one can impart one's knowledge to every students, spark their interests, nurture their intellect and emotion and so forth, while the ability of research is just tiny respect which only show the further research capacity of one professor. Thus, the contribution of Pro. Thomas in bringing more research money to university can not guarantee her true teaching ability. Moreover, the money is rarely attributable to Pro. Thomas's sole efforts, and there must be many other faculty who engage in these subjects.
Last but not least, the argument depends on the hasty assumption that without a raise and promotion, Pro. Thomas would leave Elm City University for another college. It is entirely possible that it is because Pro. Thomas's deep preference on teaching and research but not salary or position to make her this occupation. So whether Pro. Thomas would leave or not has nothing to do with salary and position. Then the speaker's ungrounded, let along provide her more money and promotion.
To sum up, the statement is logically flawed and therefore unpersuasive as it stands. To bolster his conclusion the speaker must provide more evidence to show Pro. Thomas's popularity among students, her teaching ability, as well as many other factors which make it worthwhile for university to pay a higher salary and provide promotion to maintain this excellent professor. Also, to better assess the conclusion, we would need more details about Pro. Thomas's willingness to continue teaching in Elm City University and the reasons. |
