In this era of rapid technological and social change leading to increasing complexity of education, more and more students and people from all walks of life argue that more emphasizes should be placed upon the practical purpose of the higher education. Under this circumstance, the author makes a suggestion that all the faculty should work outside the academic world in professions related to their teaching. However, in my point of view, it is a complex issue that needs further analysis from various perspectives rather than the author's hasty conclusion.
Admittedly, from some degree, the practical experience from outside world not merely helps the faculty to improve the quality of teaching and research but also introduces the up-to-date insights and technologies into the academic world. Moreover, the students will benefit a lot from the capable and experienced faculty. One can suppose that the students who are eager for profound guidance and practical knowledge will probably learn more from the faculty who keep their mind with the development of out-side world. Furthermore, it is crucial for the faculty in the disciplines, such as the engineering, architecture, reconnaissance and business, to keep the research and teaching hand in hand with the changes and trends in the outside world.
However, an observation through a different lens will lead us to the inverse of this statement. Just as one can image, not all the disciplines are suitable for their faculty to work outside the academic world to gain relevant experience. Take the humanities as an example, which occupation can a brilliant faculty in philosophy take in order to improve his recondite theory? Whether it is necessary for a faculty involved in sculptural art to find a job aimed at automobile modeling merely in the purpose of improving the quality of instruction at the college? In addition, there are many disciplines from which the outside world gains the fundamental theoretic and utilizes them into the daily life. Therefore, in this disciplines such as theoretical physics and mathematics, faculty should focus more on research and teaching of the theories and rather than methods to realize the theories.
With a further observation, a profound issue which is related to the topic comes into ones' eyes, that is, the purpose of the higher education. Just as Martin L. King Jr. once mentioned, "Higher education must train one for intensive, resolute and independent thinking." It is more important for the faculty to teach the students the technique of thinking and learning by which they can stand on themselves in a rapidly changing world rather than the fixed knowledge and the latest skills which can be out-date tomorrow. What is more, the main purpose of higher education should focus more on cultivating a permanent character which is the key to be a real man rather than infusing a practical skill which is important to manufacture a machine. Therefore, it is more important for the faculty in universities and colleges to improve the quality of instruction by imparting wisdom and thoughts to the students rather than teaching the knack and skills.
To sum up, from what has been discussed above, I hope it has been shown that students will benefit from the faculty who spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses. However, it is fallacious to generalize its applicability for all disciplines and overlook the more important purpose of higher education. Furthermore, one can anticipate the students will benefit more from a comprehensive and balanced higher education that concerns with both character shaping and skill training. |
