The author claims that money spent on research is always a good investment even when the results of that research are controversial. In my view, while I am firmly confirmed that it's just those research that make the world progress every day. However, the author begs the question by asserting that results of research which are controversial is also a good investment.

To begin with, for some research which are related tightly with our daily life, it's necessary for us to conduct immediately. Since some of them are just the most troublesome problems at present, which probably lead to very serious results. For instance, we human beings are facing two terrible diseases: aids and cancer, which kill millions of people every year. It's at present the most difficult and meaningful research for all the scientists to conduct. If they successfully solve the problem, it will save millions of people's lives. In addition, the environmental problem as well as the limitation of natural resource, are also something we should make a investment to conduct some research. Since these two problems are tightly related with human being's survival. Thus, we can draw this conclusion that some of the imperative researches which are related to our survival are worthy to make an investment.

However, sometimes, it's unnecessary for us to make some risk investments to make some researches which may have a controversial result. On one hand, we waste the whole investment and time doing these researches, on the other hand, sometimes the research may result in very serious sequel, which will have a permanent impression in people's mind. The invention of DDT is just a case in point. In the 20th century, DDT was considered to be one of the most valuable inventions. It helps killing rats and insects which are harmful to the farmland. At first, it was essential to almost all the insects and rats, however, in about 50 years, we began to suffer the serious result which brought by abusing DDT. Not only DDT loses its effect on some kinds of insects, but also it left the poisonous chemical ingredients in most of the crops even the whole farmland. The poisonous effect will keep for years and do much harm to people's health. Thus, when making a research, it's necessary for us to take its further effection into consideration.

In addition, some of the researches are controversial for it's both beneficial and infaust to us. Taking nuclear energy and clone for example, at first nuclear energy is used to provide energy efficiently, however, during the second World War, people invented citybuster, which later does great harm to the Japanese. For clone, on one hand, people want to make some contribution to the clone of organs, which will help many patients get well again. On the other hand, it brings us some ethical problems, such as the clone of a person. Thus, people need to think about more before making a research to avoid those controversial and ethical problems.

All in all, from what has been discussed above, we can easily draw our conclusion that it's necessary for us to make some investment researches in order to solve some imperative problems. Meanwhile, it's also necessary for us to avoid doing some researches which may lead to a controversial result. In final analysis, most researches are worth doing with our investment except some ones which will bring us controversial results and ethical problems.
