TOPIC: ISSUE138 - "Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."
WORDS: 559          TIME: 00:55:00          DATE: 2007-7-27 18:44:02

这篇是尝试下下的..不过失败了    很改了一会, 蓝色部分是后来加的

Discover and progress, broadly defined as the breakthrough or achievement of man kind and largely depend on the process of trails and experiments, coexists with numerous mistakes as its by-product, which gives us the illusion that mistakes play a pivotal role in the process, however, although we admit that mistakes help accumulate experiences, after deep thinking, we will rediscover what is behind the mistakes that really encourages discover and progress.
Admittedly, in most cases, the success comes together with uncountable mistakes beforehand. To witness, we should look no further than Edison, who experienced thousands of failure before the final success.  Even from reasoning, we would also accept this easily: there is only one relatively right way leading to success, and others are all wrong ways. Therefore, when man enters an unknown realm and is thirst for breakthrough, he would most probably experience a series of mistakes, through which he can find the right way.
Further more, mistakes sometimes serve as a feedback mechanism, it tells you what is wrong and that you should try a new way. Consider, if we didn't experience mistake, we would never know how far away we've biased, only until the mistake occurs, can we judge that we are wrong and make modification. Through this way, someone believes that mistakes is beneficial for progress and discover.
As stated above, such seemingly benefits of mistakes might lure people to a conclusion that mistakes are wonderful things to make us progress. However, if we think in another way, things will be different. Every one will find it absurd if a man eager for progress is in great joy simply because he had recently experienced a mistake-anyhow, it is progress ,or say, success, rather than mistake that makes a person happy. But, this is the absolute deduction if we concede that mistake contributes to progress and discover, for if mistakes really promote discovery and progress, we would surely welcome it and be happy of its appearing. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. The deviation between this deduction and the real fact implicates that there must be something wrong with our perspective on mistakes. If so, then why are we likely to receive this fallacy? Instead of mistakes, what is the real impetus lying in such progress? We will discuss below.
Firstly, as to the phenomenon that mistakes coexist with discovery, it doesn't show mistakes play a productive role in it. Just like when you got hurt, you would probably bleed, but the blood does Recall the example of Edison, if he was easily affected by failure and not strong willed, mistakes might do a counterproductive job. He would give up the research and there was no progress and discovery at all. At this time, can we say that mistakes serves as means of improving progress? Maybe some detractors would argue that Edison, in fact, learned a lot through mistakes. Ostensibly, as the mistakes accumulates, it seems that our experience about what is right is enriched. However, do all that experiences mistakes really meaningful? Most times not, for all we have to know is the right way, knowing what’s wrong is far less important than knowing what is right. In fact, there’s no distinctive difference between one who know the right way through thousands mistakes and one who happened to get the right way unexpectedly.
Secondly, as to the mechanism of feedback that mistakes serve as, do they really help modify the directions? For example, if you are driving a car, would you be happy if you get in a crash with a tree or something else and say, ' Oh, thanks to this, I know the right way'? Certainly not, most of the time we just think we are unlucky enough. But the so-called benefit really serves in such a way, which, actually, is more of detrimental than beneficial. Research and explore is just like driving in complete darkness, only when a man is determined enough to bear thousands of collisions through the course, can he finally find overcome the negative effect of mistakes and get the right way. In this course, determination, courage, and persistence are all crucial.
In sum, discovery has no direct relationship with mistakes. But it so happened that successes are more likely to coexist with mistakes. If we get rid of this illusion, we would find the benefits of mistakes are limited, instead, it is persistence, courage, and determination that makes one overcomes mistakes and finally achieve progress or discovery.

NORN的新写法,论点很好,觉得反驳的那两段论证还是不够强啊。
但是ETS很钦睐新奇想法的,如果NORN能把论证再加强,一定是好文啊!

Firstly, as to the phenomenon that mistakes coexist with discovery, it doesn't show mistakes play a productive role in it. Just like when you got hurt, you would probably bleed, 这个例子的作用我也不太搞的清楚,解释一下吧but the blood does Recall the example of Edison, if he was easily affected by failure and not strong willed, mistakes might do a counterproductive job. However, do (do => are) all that experiences mistakes really meaningful? In fact, there’s no distinctive difference between one who know the right way through thousands mistakes and one who happened to get the right way unexpectedly.

For example, if you are driving a car, would you be happy if you get in a crash with a tree or something else and say, ' Oh, thanks to this, I know the right way'? Certainly not, most of the time we just think we are unlucky enough. But the so-called benefit really serves in such a way, which, actually, is more of (of去掉) detrimental than beneficial. Research and explore is just like driving in complete darkness, only when a man is determined enough to bear thousands of collisions through the course, can he finally find overcome the negative effect of mistakes and get the right way. In this course, determination, courage, and persistence are all crucial.
