The primary goal of technological advancement should be to increase people's efficiency so that everyone has more leisure time.
The speaker in the title statement claims the technological advancement should increase people's efficiency in order to afford people more leisure time. Although the technological advancement has actually increased people's efficiency, which is obvious in every field, I disagree with the arguer on this issue. To provide more leisure time may be one goal of the technological advancement, but it will never be the primary one.
First of all, the pursuit for the advancement of technological just on purpose of our more leisure time is inappropriate in a large sense. The progress in science has benefited us in many fields: the discovery of penicillin, which can kill various germs, has rescued many patients; the invention of computer, which has been popular in human's dairy life, has resolved many harsh problems, which were too complicated to settle without computers. "Technology makes life beautiful", which is an advertisement of Media, suggests a generally reasonable conclusion--The primary goal of technological advancement should be to modify our life, society and world.
Additionally, nothing can convince us the increase will come along with the advancement of technology. Firstly, as a result of the rapidly increase of the technology, contemporary people must master more knowledge, which is believed by a professor that it was twenty times more than the sufficient amount before The First Industrial Revolution, to survive in the society. So, almost everyone should devote more time in learning, rather than enjoy more leisure time. Secondly, it was the nature of human that "Citius, Altius, Fortius". So, the advancement of technology will definitely courage more and more research, rather than rest with satisfaction.
In sum, the pursuit of technological advancement should aim at the benefit of the human and the nature, rather than obtain of more leisure time. Just as the spirit of Olympia to athletes, we should try our best to research for "more definitely, more completely, more efficiently" model, understand and engineer the world. |
