36"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
Whether the greatness of individuals should be evaluated by descendants or by their contemporaries is a complex and controversial issue for a long time. Some people may take for granted that greatness of individuals can be decided only by descendants. As far as I am concerned, both descendants and contemporaries are paramount to estimate individuals and we should establish a balance between them.

On the one hand, we have to admit that plenty of people's greatest has been recognized by society at his time.  Open the gallery of history, there are multitudinous vivid instances. Picasso, who has  created cubism painting style and be deemed to the greatest genius painter in his time. Mozart, who performed his first recital at age 6 for the Empress of Austris, his music talent has been recognized by commonalty at early age. Einstein, who put forward famous Relative Theory seemed to contradict traditional point, has been already known in their own era. Martin Luther King.Jr, who were supported and respected by numerous Negro and ultimately succeed in Liberation of Negro slave revolution. Bill Gates, who created a computer myth, is ranked as a giant in hi-tech industry due to the huge success he brought to the Microsoft as well as the contribution he made to the entire world. From art to science, from polity to economy, a lot of elites' greatness have been recognized and appreciated by society and commonality in their period. Consequently, supported by the society, individuals would have more passion and impetus to create and invent more great productions.

On the other hand, it is inevitable that plenty of talent and works have been buried and neglected by people. Actually, the greatest of individuals cannot be approbated by their contemporaries on a large scale is due to their outstanding talent and their transcendental intelligence which surpass the common cognition of general public and their peers. As to art domain, take Van Gogh for example, he always perceived the world with different eyes, during his life time his works virtually excluded and he had sold only one painting, after hundreds of years, he was highly regarded as a sign and pronoun of most great painters. Another case in a point is Beethoven, his music works also has not been appreciated by contemporaries, since these music was so rigid and stale that did not conform to the temporal standards. As time pass by, standards of aesthetic evaluation is advancing, changing and improving, a lot of works and greatness of individuals previously rejected may turn out to be acceptable.   

Finally, considering the actual situation, it needs a long time even centuries to recognize the whole validity and value of theories, works and ideas of the great individuals. As it stands, both  contemporaries and descendants' opinion are necessary to comprehensive appraise the greatness of individuals. In my opinion, the most advantage of contemporaries is that they could and communicate with elites and know more about their ideas and thoughts, and then discover the greatness of them. In addition, due to limit and incomprehensive knowledge, contemporaries are hardly to understand and recognize the discovery, invention, creation and so forth, which need to be estimated by descendants. Only combine the evaluation of two sides together could we realize the veriest greatness of individuals.

As what mentioned above, we can come to the conclusion that different people would possess different viewpoints to evaluate the greatness of individuals at different time. Therefore, contemporaries as well as descendants are play an significant role in evaluating the greatness of individuals.
