TOPIC: ISSUE169 - "Those who treat politics and morality as though they were separate realms fail to understand either the one or the other."
WORDS: 627 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2007-7-31 16:13:45
What is the relationship between politics and morality? Do they influence each other? How would they affect each other? In fact, the complexity lying in this issue requires cogitative thinking. And the responds for it is far more complex than a simple answer "yes or no".
Fundamentally, politics, mainly serves to lead the country or a group to the maximum interests and the supreme of power, is quite different from morality- which regulates the behaviors of individual. To compare, one may find the example of soccer and American football. The distinction in the basic regulations makes them different. And although they share some similarities, seldom do people consume energy to relate them together, for we can not predict the change of American football from soccer, vise via. This, to some extent can illustrate the separation between morality and politics.
To better support the idea, we need look no further than former president Clinton, who is undoubtedly a wise and effective political leader and within whose tenure the economy of the USA increase rapidly. However, what distinguished him even more was the famous ‘Clinton and Lewinsky love affair’, which implicated that the immoral side of a leader can not hinder his success in politics. It vividly shows us that sometimes morality is not necessary for doing well in politics.
For further evidence, sometimes the betraying of morality in politics can even bring benefits. Recall the first few years of the World War Two: when Hitler wanted to invade the Soviet Union, he discredited himself by tearing the contract of holding fire with it and directly marching his army into Soviet. This betray of morality brought him inestimable benefits, which the country who obey the contract till the last minute, suffered from it greatly. This example shows an even extreme fact: in politics, sometimes the obedience of morality can harm the whole country.
From the analysis above, it seems that we are safe to come to the conclusion that morality and politics has no relations. Is it really so? Yet from the mechanical view, since the definition and function of them are distinctively different, they are sure to have no relationship with each other. However, we ignore a quite important respect-the factor of human. It is men who carry out the rules of politics; also it is men who obey the moral regulations. For a single person, one’s behavior is the result of interaction of all the factors that affected him, including politics and morality; it is hard to distinguish when his action follows the moral rules, and when follows the political one. Leaders of politics are no exception. Therefore, through the interplay on people and leaders, morality and politics can affect each other to some extent.
Firstly, the high moral standard of a political leader can make him more influential in common people. Unlike leaders, ordinary people have few experiences in politics. And to a great extent the criterion on which they judge the political leaders is from their own regulations-where morality plays a quite important part. That is why in elections the candidates favor scandals as a means for attack the political enemies; that is also the reason why Lincoln are widely accepted and admired by people-for individuals always judge leaders by moral standards. Leaders of high moral levels are easily to win their good impression and support.
What's more, through the invariance of personality, behaviors of an individual, no matter in politics and in morality, have certain ties and relationships, leaders included. For example, if a person is blamed for his cruel and discredit behavior in morality, his orders in politics will largely have some similarities. Again, let me cite Hitler, who is a cruel and immoral figure in respects of morality, and if we study his orders, we would also find these characters in his political behaviors. That is to say, there is some consistency lying between a leader’s political behaviors and moral ones. Therefore, viewing from these two parts, we could find: morality, by affecting people and leaders, can influence politics to some extent.
To sum up, from the basic functions of politics and morality, they seems to be separated, however, if we take the factor of human into consideration, in which the politics and morality are interplayed, we can find some influence of each other, therefore, simply connect they or separate them are both unwise.
