Issue51Education will be truly effective only when it is specificallydesigned to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.



Whether effective education should bespecifically designed according to the student's individual needs depends primarilyon the specific fields of education. With respect to the education on the specialtiesand certain skills, I fundamentally agree with the statement; yet, when weattempt to thoroughly realize this student-oriented education, we inevitablyhave to face the concomitant difficulties and deficiencies.

As a threshold matter, the statementrequires one qualification, which resides in the general compartmentalizationof education. In certain areas of education, there is no justification fordesigning the education in a particular way. This is especially true in themorality education. Because, morality is the thing that, although doesn't actarbitrarily like laws, essentially control and alter our behaviors, from dailylife to the macroscopically social change and development of science andtechnology. Besidesanother quality of morality is the relative steadiness anduniversality which inevitably necessitate the standardization of the education,in morality. Consider, if we designed this kind of education winking at theindividual will of each student, the only aftermath would be that the studentsdon't get proper guidance in morality which result in that the choices weremade according to the personal taste not the norms recognized by the majorityof the society. As this result might finally leads to a decline or being regardlessof morality in many aspects of social development. Imagine, in technologies,the research on clone would disregard the ethics and jump outside the bounds ofmorality; besides, despite of morality, the exertions of nuclear weapon would causeunprecedented disasters on human beings.

Aside from the aforementionedqualification, I fundamentally agree with speaker that in the other areas--- bywhich I chiefly mean the professional education--- education should bedesigned. First, it is out of the purpose of education. After all, the school'sjob is to enhance the natural development of each student. And, the education whichvalues the spirit of freedom is the education that respects the individualdifferences and affirms the potential development of each student. Accordingly,the student-oriented education satisfies the preceding points. Secondly,student-oriented education can most incite the interests of students, which canbe attributed to the point mentioned above. As Albert Einstein has indicated usthat(and I paraphrase): It is interest that serves as the best teacher. Fromthese words it becomes understandably why too often we observe the educationfailure is led to by lack of interest, such as curiosity and desire ofexploration. Copernicus is proper to be mentioned as an example to illustratethe importance of interest concerning with the efficiency of education. It isthe geographical and astronomical interests which are greatly stimulated by DomencioMaria--- a mathematics professor in whose home Copernicus were living when studyingcanon law at the University of Bologna--- that finally result in the heliocentricism,the revolution of cosmological theory. However, the major, law and medicine,which Copernicus took according to many Poles of his social class, didn’t causemuch effect or led to great achievements. In addition, the students might feelinvolved and thus behave more forwardly when the education is designed for eachsingle student. So, in order to cherish the interests of the students and makethem feel involved, and to incite the initiative, education should be designedspecially for each student.

Yet, if we go too far with this kind ofeducation, the education system will finally end up with chaos result from too muchdiversity of individual needs and interests; besides, the competence of astudent to decide one's own academic direction begs the question, which more probablycannot ensure a well-round education. Since the deficiencies are self-evident,moreover there are many difficulties in the realization. For one thing, todesign the education according to everyone's will is kind of unfeasible orrather cost-prohibitive. For another thing, analysis of each student's ownsituation which helps the designation calls for enormous effort of the faculty.

To summarize, aside from certain areas ofeducation, which commonly ensure the service of society, like morality, theeducation should be designed specially towards the individual needs andinterests of each students. Although there might exist some deficiencies anddifficulties when we attempt to totally realize the student-oriented education,yet this kind of education indeed possess considerable merits.

Although there might exist some deficiencies and difficulties when we attempt to totally realize the student-oriented education, yet this kind of education indeed possess considerable merits.
