ISSUE4"No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study."
[Outline]:
I strongly agree with the idea that every field of study can make a leap when the outsiders contribute their knowledge and experience to that field of study. Those "outsiders", either experts involved in other disciplinaries that seemed not strictly connected to the specific field, or even common persons who possess relatively poor knowledge compared with the mavens in that field, could actually bring the extra brilliant ideas that transcend the boundaries and thus
assist the insiders of the field.
This assertion could be well supported by the practice in my major, the interdisciplinary field of biomedical engineering. Here, the clinical experiences and know-hows converge with the engineering wisdoms and principles, and hence force the new device to secure human health brought to the world. For instance, in treating a desperate patient who suffers severe heart failure, the ingenious engineers, though possessing relatively little medic knowledge and even less about how to handle the lance, could then invent the pacemakers mainly derived from his engineering knowledge that may aid the surgeons to save the life. Undeniably, such participation of "outsiders" is crucial in medic practice, since virtually the patient cannot survive merely by the effort of surgeons and pathologists without the pacemaker. In this case, the attendance of experts in another field makes significant contribution that advance the specific area of study. Those examples in the scientific studies are numerous. For instance, in exploring the Antarctic region, China sent a group of different experts in different fields: two veteran mariners, two sophisticated surveyors, one medic professor, one geologist, one biologist and two engineers. Such miscellaneous troop is not devised merely for any frivolous mean; rather, one may easily see such viability. In the long excursions on the snow-capped continent, surveyors are indispensable to avoid being lost, while mariners bring their experiences to deal with the seemingly frozen icebergs and potential dangers. Engineers are also required to manipulate automations and operate machines. Finally, medic treatment ensures that all team members could get in-time treatment in case certain accidents happen. To each of them, the other member seems an outsider. Yet it is their complementary cooperation that makes the exploration of the perishing region successful.
Furthermore, I must point out that the notion that only specialist in other field could aid the study in certain field is incomplete. Generally speaking, any person, with an acuity in insight and active thinking, could devote great inspiration even to the field that deemed difficult and limited to the intelligent few. In the realm of film industry, the specters, who generally bear no expertise of how to act and direct, are the best group that auspice the development of film art. For each film, whenever it came into being, public appreciations and criticisms of that film appear like a shadow. Those comments made by those various kinds of audiences, who bring on their critical thinking and inspirations in mind, not only reflect a direct sentiment to the film worker’s creation but also may entail some precious advice. Needless to say, the film industry relies heavily upon those outsiders' criticisms and comments, and to some extent, it is hard to imagine what this industry will be without it.
In sum, there is evidence that every field of study in human society calls for the active participations and assistance from outsiders. Those outsiders, no matter specialists or common persons , either with a scintillating idea or prudent bearing of other skills, significantly complement the current field of knowledge that insiders are undertaking, and widen their narrowly focused ken to a larger picture at the same time.
