"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantlyreduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that innearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctoronly once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating asubstantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason mostfrequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily useof Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way toprevent colds and lower absenteeism."

The arguer concludesthat Ichthaid is a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism because fishseems to be helpful to prevent colds, and then Ichthaid which is derived fromfish oil seems to prevent colds too. Also, if Ichthaid can prevent colds, absenteeismseems to be prevented. Atfirst glance, his view seems to be sound and well-presented. However, I’m afraid hisargument can hardly bear further consideration since there are several flaws init.

Firstly, before recommending Ichthaid to people to prevent colds, the evidencegiven in the argument should be examined from several other angles. Theresearchers who conducted the study seem to have assumed that eating a lot offish can prevent colds without examining any other factors which may haveaffected the results of the study. It is possible that the weather in East Meriais quite different from the one in West Meria.Perhaps East Meriais much warmer than West Meria,and the comfortable weather contributes a lot to the small possibility ofcatching colds. What’s more, weather in East Meriamight change slightly, which seldom causes people catch cold. Also, the one or twotimes people go to see doctor can’t shows the true situation of whether peoplein East Meria only get cold once or twice, since many people prefer to stay athome to get rest or take medicine when they have slight colds for which they thinkthat they needn’t visit the doctor. If these were the case, the study’s resultswould be questionable, at best.

Secondly, given that eating fish can prevent colds, the arguer fails to provideany evidence that Ichthaid have the same function of fish. He only mentionsthat Ichthaid is a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, however, it ispossible that the process of refining the fish might lose or even damage theingredient that are mainly responsible for preventing colds. Besides, perhapsIchthaid has some side effect, even if it could effectively prevent colds, ifeating it causes many other diseases, it might not be a feasible way. Thus, thearguer can not make any sound claim that Ichthaid is a good way to prevent colds.

Thirdly, eating Ichthaid could not guarantee reduce in absenteeism, becausethere is no evidence in the argument shows that people are absent from schooland work mainly because they catch colds. In fact, it is quite often that manypeople make excuse of having colds to ask for leave. Also, many people areabsent from school and work for many other reasons, such as an important familyget-together, a sudden accident of their relatives or friends and a rest foradjustment. Without considering and ruling out these and other possibleexplanation for the absenteeism, the arguer's claim that Ichthaid helps preventabsenteeism would be susceptive.

In all,to persuade me that the daily use of Ichthaid is a good way to preventcoldsand lower absenteeism, the arguer must provide evidence that fish areresponsiblefor prevent colds and Ichthaid can act as same as thefish. Moreover,the arguer should show me that people are absent from school and workmainlybecause they catch colds.
