I fundamentally disagree with the assertion that what we called non-mainstream areas today such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuit has played a significant role in human society. As far as I am concerned, with the soaring development of science and technology, effects of those non-mainstream areas would fade away from the vision of people.

Admittedly, we should admit that non-mainstream areas once had an overwhelming impact on human history and still survive in the 21st century. In the ancient China, many people can not understand how could rain and lightning and floodwater come and result in mischance, they hold rituals and ceremonials to sacrificed the divinity and hope a harmonious circumstance. Nowadays, some traditional mysterious cultures are still popular in even several highly civilized regions such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan, continuously serving for consoling people's mental disarrangements that are beyond of modern civilization. But it should be point out that the function which the non-mainstream areas played today are quietly distinguished from that of past.

Howbeit, astrology, fortune-telling and many other unscientific cultures would not satisfy human beings' needs and be washed out ultimately. In the primitive age of human history, when science and technology was not exist, it were only these somewhat mysterious styled cultures that ancient people could resort to for the sake of eliminating or at least alleviating their confusion and anxiety over the miracles existing in nature. Nevertheless, as time goes by and the increasing of people's knowledge level, no one is too naive to believe that those non-mainstream areas could explain the whole mysterious world and tell him everything. Only modern iatrology rather than praying God could cure sick people. Only modern biology technology rather than paranormal energy could explain the essential structure of human being and extend life-span. Moreover, in Hong Kong and other places, some non-mainstream traditions are even used as lucrative programs to captive foreign tourists. Non-mainstream traditions have not dominated human civilization and not flourishing any more. On the contrary, its status is less and less unimportant for the development and modernization of human being.

Furthermore, more and more people realized that only science and technology can provide human final and complete satisfaction which is what human want. Multitudinous problems and phenomena existed for numerous years have been resolved and explained by scientific methods. For example, people could predict the weather using advanced instruments to help cultivate and stand against natural disaster. Astronomy has illustrated a series of natural phenomena, such as the shadow existed on the moon is just some holes on the moon surface. Therefore, it is not a surprise that science and technology gradually substitute for non-mainstream areas, becoming the new mainstream of modern age, for that they can better serve for human needs or desires, either mentally or materially.

To sum up, it is inevitable that science and technology would play an incontestably dominant role in modern society and be the mainstay of human being. Meanwhile, non-mainstream areas would gradually retreat from human stage.
