I strongly agree with the speaker that the absence of choice is a very rare circumstance. As I see it, our human have free will to act and choose what to do, and having no choice is not accord with our common sense.
To begin with, almost in all conditions, we human can freely make our choice and decision. Common sense indicates that we all have free will to take action. Although we often hear some people claim “I have no choice but to do….” these sorts of claims seem that people lack choice. However, in fact, this is just because people are considering the alternative choices that are not viable or attractive enough, so they do not want to select these choices which would lead to some unpleasant and worse consequences. For example, for a soldier, disobeying orders is always available, but it will bring punishments to the soldier. Therefore, this condition is not a true absence of choice, it is because people do not want to choose but not they having no choice; they just think the choice is not safe or appealing enough.
Beside, let us look at the opposite claim that we often have no choice. I part this circumstance into two conditions. The first is that in some or many times, we cannot choose the way we action or make our decision. The second is that the matter “we can choice” is just an illusion, and our decision are all predetermined by other forces beyond our control. For former condition, I think it can happen in some extreme circumstances like very small age (1-3 years), mental disease or some unconscious states, or death --- in any of which people might not have ability to make their conscious decisions, nevertheless, these circumstances are extreme and very rare. For the later condition, as far as I know, there indeed has a philosophical school called strict determinism which support to this point of view. They argue that our actions and decisions are determined not by ourselves but by some unknown forces beyond our control, however, nowadays science has not lent enough evidence to support this view, so we can temporarily assume that it is wrong. Therefore, through the discussion above, it is safely to conclude that the absence of choice is a very rare circumstance.
Of course, although it is a very rare condition, yet it is not to say that no choice is fully impossible. In addition to some conditions mentioned above like unconscious states, there have some other circumstances in which people have no choice. For example, we have no choice of our birth and death. Few days ago, a person who wants to commit suicide, jumps from 32 floor building and falls on two persons who stand besides the building. For these two innocent persons they have no choice to select but to die.
To sum up, I strongly agree with the speaker’s contention, for our human have free will to choose what to do and consequently we should be accountable for our action and decision. Although in the future, strict determinism may be proved to be true position, however, at least for now it is just a non-mainstream argument. So I stick to my point of view that we always have choice, and only in some extreme conditions, we might have no choice.
