Argument65 Thefollowing appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese storeslocated throughout the United  States.
"Formany years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of bothdomestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-sellingcheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore,a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasingpreference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company canreduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in allof our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of importedcheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

The arguer concludes that the best way to improve profits in all of the cheese storesis to stop stocking many imported cheese and focus mainly on domestic ones. His view seems to be sound and convincing at first glance. under further consideration, his argument, however, contains several facets that are questionable. First, the argument unfairly assumes that the best-selling fact in their newest store is representative to all of the cheeses stores. In addition, the reliability of the survey  is open to question. The argument also fails to examine the way of reducing cost of imported cheese inventory to increase profit. I will discuss each of these facets inturn.

Firstly, the argument lacks of evidence to prove that the sales of cheeses in other stores would bethe same as the one of the newest store where the five best-selling domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. He ignores he possibility that the newest store is located in Wisconsin where residents there specially prefer the taste of domestic cheese in this district, while in other districts Wisconsin cheeses maybe not so popular. Even if the domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin are welcomed throughout the United States, still no evidence shows that domestic cheeses are best-selling in the all stores in that newest stores carry on sales promotion of Wisconsin cheddar cheeses in order to attract customers and then enhance its popularity. So things would be quite different in other stores since they may do not take such promotion activities. It is quite possible that other stores’ best-selling cheeses are imported cheese, so the assertion that the best-selling cheeses in other stores are also the domestic one is unwarranted.

Secondly, the survey by Cheeses of the World magazine is unconvincing in that all the respondents of the survey are only the subscribers of the magazine. It isentirely possible that people who subscribe the magazine are those who love domestic cheeses, while those who enjoy imported chesses do not buy the magazine; consequently do not respond their preference to the magazine. Even if both the domestic cheeses lovers and the imported cheese lovers subscribe the magazine and participate in its survey, the outcome is still untrustworthy in that perhaps they only take up a tiny fraction of the cheese customers throughout the country. Hence, the survey from the magazine as an evidence of the conclusionis problematic.

Last but not least, the arguer is too hasty to conclude that profits would be enhanced in their stores because of the reducing expense by stop importedcheese stocking. The stores would finally lose customers who favor imported cheeses, if they discontinue imported cheese inventory. Moreover, it is entirely possible that imported cheeses can sale at a fairly high price far beyond the cost though their sales are not as large as the domestic ones. Domestic cheeses, on the contrary, are sold at a low price and its large sales could bring only small profits. Therefore, the argument is unwarranted without ruling out such possibility.

To sum up, to persuade me that to stop stocking many imported cheese and focus mainly ondomestic ones is the best way to improve profit for all of the cheese stores, the arguer must provide enough information about other stores’ best-selling cheeses are also domestic ones andshow me that the survey by Cheeses of the World magazine is reliable. Moreover, the arguer should show me that reducing cost in inventory of imported cheeses could ensure increasing profits.

I will discuss each of these facets inturn.(你是有钱人。。

Firstly, the argument lacks of evidence to prove that the sales of cheeses in other stores would bethe same as the one of the newest store where the five best-selling domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin.(感觉这句TS太长了)He ignores the possibility that the newest store is located in Wisconsin where residents there specially prefer the taste of domestic cheese in this district, while in other districts Wisconsin cheeses maybe not so popular. 这一段还是应该围绕 店子本身能否代表一般趋势展开the domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin are welcomed throughout the United States, still no evidence shows that domestic cheeses are best-selling in the all stores in that newest stores carry on sales promotion of Wisconsin cheddar cheeses in order to attract customers and then enhance its popularity.

It isentirely possible that people who subscribe the magazine are those who love domestic cheeses, while those who enjoy imported chesses do not buy the magazine(这个反例不太好;换个说法 这些人比较关心cheese质量 而这个杂志上普遍承认国内的质量要好些); consequently do not respond their preference to the magazine. 和上段一样这是并列的二方面它因, 我觉得first second 什么的也可以)both the domestic cheeses lovers and the imported cheese lovers subscribe the magazine and participate in its survey, the outcome is still untrustworthy in that (这里你两次用in that; 这个词其实是对原因的概括, 用了;考场上就要求把原因能够归纳到一个从句。这很费时)(和perhaps一起用不好啊)perhaps they only take up a tiny fraction of the cheese customers throughout the country. Hence, the survey from the magazine as an evidence of the conclusionis problematic.

Last but not least, the arguer is too hasty to conclude that profits would be enhanced in their stores because of the reducing expense by stop importedcheese stocking. The stores would finally lose customers who favor imported cheeses, if they discontinue imported cheese inventory.(不是if放这里不行,我觉得使用顺序思维行为快些 有它因-if... ) Moreover, it is entirely possible that imported cheeses can sale at a fairly high price far beyond the cost though their sales are not as large as the domestic ones. Domestic cheeses, on the contrary, are sold at a low price and its large sales could bring only small profits. Therefore, the argument is unwarranted without ruling out such possibility.
