The speaker asserts that a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards to be an effective leader. In general, I agree that morality plays an important role in each field, but is varies case to case.

In the business world, a business leader is required to maintain high moral standards. A successful business leader is usually defined as the one who can achieve the profit maximization for shareholders and other owners in the company. Although the standards of evaluation business leaders seemly have nothing to do with morality, morality certainly affects the success of a business leader because it is one of the determinants to ultimate profit. The business world supports this point. Take Mitsubishi for example. Mitsubishi had concealed a safety defect of its major product Pajero in the brake system which had caused many car accidents proven by later investigation long before the company apologized and called back the problematic cars. The company eventually suffered not only the loss of profits, but also the confidence of consumers for this scandal. On the contrary, Bayer, one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies, announced to cease the production of its major product because the ingredients were found hazardous. This action obtained the understanding and forgiveness from its consumers. And to certain extent, its development was promoted in long term. The morality of a business leader represents not the leader himself only, but also the whole company, thus it influences the company's decisions and the impact on the society. Business leaders' decisions out of morality might render the short-term profits damaged, however, the company will achieve the confidence of consumers and good public images, and ultimately, their profits would be guaranteed. Oppositely, those immoral decision of business leaders might earn the company profits in a short term, would be detrimental to company's long term profits.

In the realm of politics, whether leaders' moral and ethical standards are equally important as they are in business world, is decided by their exertion confines, and is more complex because of the fundamental attribute of politics. In the scope of individuals, political leaders' morality deeply affects their life of career. Consider how Bill Clinton was punished by the scandal of marital indiscretion. As an individual, a political leader should maintain a high moral standards or his career would be harmed. On the other hand, as public morality is concerned, political leaders are not and can not be a moral leader. Because what they do sometimes are beyond general morality. Facing the urgent issues, the political leaders have to make decisions promptly enough to solve the problem. Hence, the options are usually limited and political leaders need to choose those that can protect the majority's rights. For example, after the terrorism attack in London, the safety check in Heathrow Airport was strengthened much further and even not humane. Although the safety protection did harm to some passengers' dignity, it certainly assured the safety for all in the airport and in London. Individual morality and systematic morality are different concepts. For individuals, he can give up his right and surrender to public. For political leaders, however, since they are on behalf of the majority public, can not make this sacrifice out of morality at all, and thus their decisions might be noxious for some, still they are the proper decisions. Besides, we can not infer that politics is immoral from the analysis above, it is actually nonmoral. In other words, politics is independent from morality. The evaluation of political success is not based on morality, so the political leaders do not need to over consider moral factors in making decisions.

In sum, the importance of moral and ethics standards varies case to case. They are in need for leaders in business world, but they cannot intervene in political leaders' decisions. However, there are certain moral values shared by all human beings and we want our children to learn and make them their own: honesty, fairness, self-discipline, fidelity to task, personal responsibility and so forth. No matter how important or trivial morality in various fields is, it is morality that keeps human beings as a whole spiritually prosperous.
