TOPIC: ARGUMENT218 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Hyper-Go Toy Company.
"Last year, sales of our Fierce Fighter toy airplane declined sharply, even though the toy had been a top seller for three years. Our customer surveys show that parents are now more worried about youthful violence and are concerned about better education for their children. Therefore, to maintain profits we should discontinue all our action toys and focus exclusively on a new line of educational toys. Several other toy companies have already begun marketing educational toys and report sales increases last year of 200 percent. And since the average family income is growing, sales of new Hyper-Go toys should also increase."

The argument made a conclusion that the sales of new Hyper-Go toys should increase depending on the company's new policy of replacing all the action toys of educational ones and the other companies' achievements after marketing the educational toys. However, there are many unreasonable assertions in the argument which I will display.
Firstly, the argument asserts that the Fierce Fighter toy airplane are less welcomed among the parents because they worry about youthful violence. This assertion seems to be correct since the Fierce Fighter toy airplane has something to do with "fierce fighter". However, it is known that most of the toys in the market will have dimished selling at last and the popularities of the children changes everyday. The most propable reason why this toy airplane was no longer top seller is just the trend of the market. Besides, the name of "fierce fighter" hardly relates "violence" and the toy is merely an airplane model, which has nothing to do with violent events.
Secondly, the argument displays the fact that several other toy companies's report about increasing sales. Nontheless, no evidence shows any relationship between the marketing educational toys and the increasing sales. The sales might have increased for many other reasons such as enlarging the business, more supermarket bills, etc. In order to make the assertion convincable more evidence concerning the profits and products shoule be presented to the readers. Moreover, the increasing sales cannot represent increasing profits. It is highly possible that the prices decrease and thus the net profits remains.
Finally, the argument make a conclusion that the sales of new product will grow since the average family income is growing. This assertion depends on an asummption that the money spent on toys increases along with the family income. However, the asumption is not convicible, since for the parents the money spent on toys is not an important part and for the children not too many toys are needed. Additionally, the argument's assertion that the company will make more profit because other companies have made is also not convincible since the concrete conditions of them might be different.
In sum , the argument makes a conclusion depending on the facts that have nothing to do with the profits and that are not clear enough. In order to make the assertions more convicible, more detailed evidences should be provided.
