Whether a successful leader must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards is quite a complex issue, which involving ethical and moral problems as well as the definition of successful leadership. As I see it, high ethical and moral standards are not only necessary but helpful for those leaders. Because of the complexity of this issue I prepare to specifically discuss the leadership in the political area.First of all, the public’s criterion to judge whether leaders have properly used their power and privilege bestowed by people is the moral and ethical standards, which usually are not individual but social ones. In other words, what people are more concerned is how political leaders’ policies are on behalf of all the civics. With the guidance of the broader standards, political leaders are able to draw proper decisions that can benefit their country and people, and only in this manner, they can be considered as having fulfilled their own responsibility and in turn to be successful. Our history sustains this kind of success, many famous leaders such as Washington and Lincoln would be respected forever for their contributions to the whole nation. Yet the some personal moral or ethical flaws would not greatly influence people’s estimation toward political leaders. For example people would not deny that Kennedy was most successful as his role of president of United States only because of his problems in his private life, and similarly, the American electorates also advocated President Clinton’s leadership with their votes for the second time, although his scandal with Lewinsky has become jokes in people’s daily talking.In addition, a leader lack of basic ethical and moral standards is likely to bring about national crisis and even worldwide catastrophe. Also in America, Nixon’s Watergate affair, in which he cheated the public for his own profit, nearly destroy government’s credit and eventually ended his own political career. A long period of time after that affaire, American still held strong suspicion that weather the government still lied to them, which strain the relationship between government and people. Hitler is another such leader whose impact lead catastrophe to his country and the whole world. With imposing his distorted ethical and moral standards to German people, he start the World War 2, and enforce the extinction policy to Jew, killing nearly one third of them; and for his own ambition, Hitler involved all the German to the brutal war, but even in the most powerful period time of his aggression, ordinary German people did not have the comfortable life that he had promised, instead, what they obtain was endless agony. Therefore, his name Hitler has eventually become the synonyms of evil.However, when the power of leaders or the government is huge enough to blind people’s virtuous nature, normal ethical and moral standards would become meaningless. Those entirely absurd thoughts could accept by people and even become their belief. Unfortunately, this tragedy does happen in Japan. Almost 70 years ago, Japan starts its oriental aggression with the name of liberating all the Asia. In this evil war, Japanese army’s barbarity is not less than Hitler's, not only did it produce the Nanjing Massacre which shocked the world, but also forced the captured women to be soldiers’ sexual slaves, which is the most filthy behavior in human history. More terribly, Japan people and the government today still think what they did in the war was correct, and refuse to apologize to victims and their countries, and even prospect those criminals in the war as national heroes. In my opinion, the reason why Japanese has such despicable characteristics is that the over-powerful government has distorted their human nature.In conclusion, although the moral and ethical standards are necessary for most of the political leaders, history informed us that we should be ware of those evil intended and an over-powerful government. Any mistaken leadership would give its people even the whole world harm.
