题目:ARGUMENT220 - The following appeared in an article in a magazine for writers.
14.
15. "A recent study showed that in describing a typical day's conversation, people make an average of 23 references to watching television and only 1 reference to reading fiction. This result suggests that, compared with the television industry, the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. Therefore, people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media."

17.
18. In above argument, the arguer recommends that people who want to devote to writing career should acquire experiences in writing for television. however, before put the public on the notice to this recommendation, following fallacies should be ruled out at first.
19. At the beginning, the arguer unfairly assumes that all the writers should cater the needs of the public and just write for a utilitarian purpose. Common sense tell us, people usually are apt to be success in the things which he is interested in, if a writer works just under the obligation of reality and serve just to cater financial needs, writing will not only be a boring things but also distract him from what he really is interested in. in addition, people's demands and taste vary all the time, if a writer always change his writing styles and purpose, it will be hard for him to success.
20.
21. Secondly, the arguer unwarrantedly assumes that there will be a decline in bookselling industries and the publishing’s profits. the fact that people make an rare references to books is not sufficient to sustain the assumption, this "rare references" could be explainable by other possibilities(be explained by other ....), such as different personal taste of books, chatting habits, and so on.(是想说有些人不愿意提到书?理解起来很吃力) For example, we know that people usually would like to choose a common topic for a nice chatting, from this point, TV would like to be(这里用的不对sb would like to do sth) far more better a choice than books, while nearly every home owns a TV, it is impossible for each person like a same book(题目中没有说是同一本书,只是说小说,其实我觉得与其说人们的爱好什么的,倒不如换个角度攻击,说喜欢看书不一定喜欢看小说). moreover, even we assume that people are more apt to watch TV than read books, the arguer fails to provide that facts to inform us in former times people preferred books to TV, without knowing the comparison before, we could not deduct the profits of bookselling industries would decrease. it is highly possible that people held the same attitudes toward books before, which means there are no change in bookselling and publishing companies' profits.(我觉得这段攻击的其实不止一个点,可以分开来说,会比较清楚,都在一起倒不是很清楚了)
22.
23. In conclusion, only the arguer could provide more evidence to bolster there will be a decline in bookselling and publishing company's profits and writers have more reason to yield to this trend, the argument could be persuasive. |
