The speaker asserts that understanding of the past provides little guidance for the contemporaries because things today are new and complex. I concede that people face a lot of things which greatly beyond the imagination of our predecessors, however I don't agree that there are little things we can learn from past.
Admitted, with the world moving on, new things increasingly emerging, the world has become far more different with what is used to be. The most recent century has seen the dramatic development the world. The great advance in technology has brought a revolution to every corners of the world. A lot of traditional business waned with the booming of some new professions. The Email which thanks to the great development in information technology is challenging the position of traditional post business; the traditional newspapers are also threatened by the internet and television. The increasingly eventful world made it an onerous task for us to image what will happen tomorrow, what the world will be look like, not to mention the predecessors, it seems completely impossible for them to anticipate the current world. Thus expect to learn the exact method or solution to the problems will surely turn out to be a dream just as the speaker has claimed.
However, though it is highly unlikely to seek the ready solution for our own problem, we indeed can learn something from history which can provide us some enlightenments, some principles. As we always learn from our own experience, learning from other experiences can also benefit us a lot, learning from our predecessors, namely learning from history is extension of learning from others.
First, learning the successful experience from history will teach us how to deal with the similar situation to make the expected achievement. One example coming immediately to mind is the economic and social development in some developing counties, the most urgent thing for this countries ,which have just win their independence, is to seek an effective developing way. The developing period of US provide them a good lesson, attaching more importance to education and science is regarded as the secrets of fast economic development. China's astonishing development in economy verified the effects of learning from the other country's successful experiments, after the implementation of open-up and reform policy pioneered by Mr. Deng Xiaoping in 17th century. In short, learning form the successful cases in history can provide a short-cut to expected success if we have an insight of the true causes of the history success and can apply the principle to our current circumstance appropriately.
Secondly, the history will teach us even more when come to learning the error or mistakes from history since repeating the mistakes we have made before is hardly acceptable. To some degree it is one responsibility of contemporaries to learn from history to avoid the big mistake in history. The biggest lessons the history give us should be the two world wars which are the disaster of human world, numerous deaths plus great losses in resources and economy. We cannot afford to repeat it again considering the sharp military development such as the nuclear weapons, vast destruction weapons in several big countries. The capability to destroy the planet where they are living hundreds of times makes the world war the end of the human world rather than a disaster nearly one century ago. It is responsibility of politicians and military leaders to fully learn from the history to avoid the horrible repeating of history.
In sum, world have changed ,and our life has changed accordingly, but the value that history did not fade. History can not provide the ready solution for the problem we meet today because of the new and complex world we are living in. But the basic principles as well as the positive experiments and negative experiments do indeed give us some lessons which will benefit us as much as we mine the useful things from it. Without thoroughly learning from history, we are likely to waste our time to try and experience something we can learn form history or to repeat the error in history.
