---------------------------------------
The author asserts that rituals and ceremonies contribute to the definition of a culture and with the help of them, societies and groups of people have an enhanced sense of who they are. As far as I concerned, a definition of a culture requires varieties of elements besides rituals and ceremonies, and it's the culture rather than rituals and ceremonies that makes people aware of who they are.
Generally, rituals and ceremonies are some of the basic elements that best express a certain culture. When people attend certain rituals as well as ceremonies, they will be deeply impact and edified by its unique circumstance of culture and acquire some of the basic rules from these kind of rituals and ceremonies. For instance, in Xinjiang, where people still keep their traditional ceremonies of announcing that a boy becomes a man, the young man will first close his eyes and sing some certain lections and then, the elder will cut all his hair which means he is no longer a boy and begins to take the responsibility of raising the generations and make contribution to the hamlet from the moment. From this kind of ceremonies, people can get through a certain culture easily, that is to say, rituals and ceremonies are best representatives of a culture.
Howbeit, rituals and ceremonies are not the only elements to define a culture. An integrated culture consists of a variety of elements including language, costume, custom etc. Rituals and ceremonies can be similar in different cultures, however, people still have other clues to distinguish one culture from another such as their language and costume. Take the native Indians in America for example, Indians usually dress in dresses made of leafs and grasses with some feathers around them. They draw some certain symbols with different colors on their face to show some of their religion belief. Thus, it's easy for us to distinguish people in a certain culture from others with the help of their costumes. In a word, rituals and ceremonies help define a culture, but they are unable to reflect all the features of a culture without the help of other elements in this culture.
Moreover, it's the culture rather than the rituals and ceremonies that help people have a sense of who they are. As is mentioned before, the rituals and ceremonies of different cultures can be similar or even the same, conversely, a culture is correspondingly exclusive and unique. For example, in China, people have many kinds of ceremonies and rituals, however, some of them are similar to that in countries of southeastern Asia since people in this area used to live together so that they share the same kind of ceremonies and rituals. Nevertheless, Chinese culture has a history of over five thousand years, it's quite easy for a Chinese to know about his culture from many other aspects such as poems, traditional manners as well as different ways people celebrate festivals. Thus, when it comes to the sense of realizing who we are, it's the culture rather than the rituals and ceremonies that play the vital role.
To sum up, people definite a culture through many facets and elements besides rituals and ceremonies. On the other hand, it's the culture that helps one to have a sense of who he is rather than the certain rituals and ceremonies of this culture. |
