Issue167 "It is impossible for an effective political leader to tell the truth all the time. Complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a politician."

Should a truly effective politician keep people from knowing something, as the speaker contends? I agree insofar as it is necessary, at the issues of national security, benefits, and so on, for political leaders to do so. At some point, however, I think honesty is an absolute virtue for them.

On the one hand, when faced with the information concern about Party's secrets or any similar things, the political leader is expected to keep the public from them. Lucid politics, if any, would reveal the politician's simplicity and immaturity. No body would disclose privacy at hazard, such as property details, to the others, because it may hurt one's life. It is not dissimilar to political affairs. To avoid potential aggression, comfort the public, and stabilize the society, an effective political leader is in duty bound to hide some key information and try to solve them. Complete forthright leads to complete collapse.

On the other hand, If a politician lies under other situations, the behavior greatly damage the right of knowing the inside story which is the foundation of democratic society. Since it has no relation with national issues, it could dictate that some politicians violate the public trust and abuse their right. Take the well-known Watergate affair for example, Nixon was in his president position at that time, however, things changed since the scandal taken place which lead to Nixon's resign. Another president, Bill Clinton, can not avoid involving in sexual-gate and some surveys indicate that his support rate declined after exposure of the scandal. So we may reach to an elementary conclusion that no credence would be lend to government if an political leader keep dishonest, or even worse, riots may be triggered.

Deep down, the only time a politician can rally the public around him is when he becomes upright. Serving the people wholeheartly, and they will feel it. The truly effective politician, Gandhi, forced the Britain to grand independence to India and gained respect not  only from Indians but also people from all over the world.

In sum, due to aforementioned reasons, we may safely arrived at the final conclusion that
a politician should decide to hide information or not from public upon different situations. It is complex because the situations are hard to be defined clearly. When it has relation with the national security, I agree that a politician should not always tell the truth.
