Issue 38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

这篇没有开始记时最后把表关了,:funk:  大概用了近两小时吧      Words:545
Can people learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books? Some would agree and aver that reading books is no longer society’s primary source of knowledge. Nonetheless, watching television is less time-consuming, reading still have important advantages compared with watching television. Namely, reading books remains the sole source of knowledge that contains the greatest amount and variety of information, inspires people’s imaginations, and helps people develop essential skills.

Although some people believe that individuals can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books, this is not necessarily so. When it comes to abstract ideas and theories, accurate literal descriptions, such as repeatition and comparison, the traditional books are obviously more efficient. Taking the study of some species of fish for instance, although we could see how they look like and what their living circumstances are, and at the same time listening to the introduction of background knowledges such as their behavior, habits, reproducibility and so on. Yet if we want a more detailed knowledge of the skeleton structure of this species, or of its kinships, we will have to read books. Someone may argue that, such knowledge can also be presented on television. But will it be so systematically arranged as it is in books? Or can one absorb all information on television and does not need any review or reference? In most cases, the answer is no.

Not only can people access information in books that is not presented on television, but also reading such information inspires the imagination. Hardly could anyone disagree that individuals use their imaginations much more when they read than watching TV. To illustrate, Reading books is an active process, authors leave so much subtlety in their works, thus the final “picture” is created at every reader’s own will by people’s individual interpretations of the books they read. In contrast, viewers’ picture is dependent upon the interpretation of the film director, not leaving much to the imaginational room of the viewers. In effect, a society that is solely exposed to television can easily lose its originality and cease to produce great artists, novelists, and film directors whose imaginations play a key role in their successfulness.

Moreover,
watching television more will impair some basic learning skills of the indivudual which could be compensated by way of reading. When individuals immerse themselves into literature not junk literature, they will develop important skills, such as analytical reasoning, vocabulary building, and a feel for grammar usage. Because most television shows and films are gluttled with slang and improper grammar usage, reading books can exclusively develop these skills in individuals. Good analytical and communication skills are important to the development of well-rounded individuals and are the very key during each phase of life—from early childhood, through college, and employment.

To sum up, reading meaningful literature can play a key role to individuals’ successfulness throughout their lives. Through developing people’s imaginations, as well as communication and analytical skills, and offering a large pool of information, reading books is far more advantageous for individual development than watching television is. Although reading is more time-consuming, individuals should not be afraid to invest their time and energy to this activity as they can clearly benefit from it in the long run.

thanks for beating ^-^

本文语言流畅(什么时候我也能像这样就好了~~),观点清晰,我这个小菜鸟“无从下拍”呵

不过有一点想和你讨论的是,如果是一篇大负小正型的文章,关于电视机的优势要不要出现呢?本文中只提到一个less time-consuming 。我觉得电视机的好处提出来也有出于负面观点的推出

就这样了,望你多多指教,谢

revison for timeup's issue 38

Can people learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books? Some would agree and aver that reading books is no longer a society’s primary source of knowledge. Nonetheless,(用在此处好像没有转折关系吧,用and我认为要好点) watching television is less time-consuming, Nonetheless(此处可以转折一下) reading still have important advantages compared with watching television; namely, reading books remains the sole source of knowledge that contains the greatest amount and variety of information,(也不一定是这样的吧) inspires people’s imaginations and helps people develop essential skills.(个人觉得后面的三条短语并列虽好,但是好像不是READINGBOOKS的UNIQUE ADVANTAGE)
Although some people believe that individuals can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books, this is not necessarily to be so . When it comes to abstract ideas and theories, accurate literal descriptions, such as repetitions and comparisons, the traditional books are obviously more efficient. Not only can people access information in books that is not presented on television, but also reading such information inspires the imagination.倒装感觉有点唐突,个人意见啊 Hardly could anyone disagree that individuals use their imaginations much more when they read than watching TV. To illustrate, Reading books is an active process, authors leave so much subtlety in their works, thus the final “picture” is created at every reader’s own will by people’s individual interpretations of the books they read. Good analytical and communication skills are important to the development of well-rounded individuals and are the very key during each phase of life—from early childhood, through college, and employment.我觉得此段不是很适合,可能是我没有理解LZ,但是我认真的看了LZ的大作两次,因为读书也不是万能无一害的,{个人意见}

To sum up, reading meaningful literature can play a key role to individuals’ success throughout their lives. Through developing people’s imaginations, as well as communication and analytical skills, and offering a large pool of information, reading books is far more advantageous for individual development than watching television is.
