TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."WORDS: 540               TIME: 1:30

This is an era filled with various scientific achievement, and television is one of the most flamboyant among them, influencing several generations’ behavior by molding them into the same mindest regardless of their race, gender, and background. Intoxicated by the superficial success of TV culture, some throw the irresponsible statement that reading is not as important as it once was, for people can learn much by watch television as they can by reading book. This is far from the truth, though television has become an integral part of our daily lives, the role that books play is still irreplaceable and merits further advocation.

Admittedly, television has many merits, for those reading cannot catch. Indeed the vivid formation can attract more attention than reading, from which people even children addict to in the colorful appearance and interesting dialogue. The best one of this is Disney a worldwide company that is famous and be extolled among children all around the world, one of its fists is cartoon such as Snow White possess great reputation，for it provide us a vivid appearance in which we may find more details from those we can melt to go into story as if we are the leading role。Another essential reason is that from television the more information we can receive. It is fortunate that we can see such program like Discovery, for it is contrived by hundreds specialist’s exert, investigate mystery and unknowable knowledge. We can see that television is a indispensable part of modern live.

Nonetheless all these advantage its shortcoming is cannot be neglected. Because something can be and only can be illustrated by book, on contrary, it is so hard or even cannot be emerge by the way of using television. So reading is necessary。

Nevertheless, its advantage can also convert to shortcoming in some degree. Due to its attracting broadcast, people abandoned in it and pay no attention to others, this lead to set of problem. Besides, television structure operate as a profit enterprises, its programs are profit-based, and  their commendation orientation drives them to entertaining more so than educational, for the latter are typically less profitable. It is helpless to people, or even harmful to children, for they have little experience to extract elite from various program, in which may fraught with violent and sex, bur children may imitative what they see and impede their develop and the future of society.

Last but not least, one choose reading and television according to their own favor, some people may intend to have a direct feeling which can leave them a deep impression, is useful for remembering, otherwise, others incline to reading books, in this process they can review the past what is so obscure that cannot understand immediately. We all know that decorate with books is a good way.

In conclusion, I do believe we need to look for a bit more balance between watching television and reading books, we should make use of their merit to perfect ourselves. Borrowing the saying John Keats inscribed on his tombstone, we can describe television program as “written on water”, whereas for books, as William Shakespeare wrote, “nothing of them doth fade/but doth suffer a seachange /into something rich and strange.
