It is a good question ,I feel when virtual is used as a adj,it can be meant as not real;when virtual is used as adverb,it could be used as actually.

virtual 的意思是虚拟的，但是十分接近真实的。比如虚拟现实，virtual reality，就是对现实的逼真的虚拟。估计这就是词典上所说的“实质”的含义。用作副词的时候也是一个意思，和 almost 的意思有些相似，但是更强烈，但是不能等同于 actually。从某种角度说 virtually 和 actually 是反义词。不过 virtual 和 real 并不是反义词，因为 real 的含义是真实而不是现实

my understanding is that when virtual is used generally used as a adjective,like virtual reality,it means something unrealistic,untrue.on the other hand,when we use it in the form of virtually,it equals to the word literally,i think.what you say?

speaking of this virtual reality thing, i have the impression that it refers to sth unreal, since it is virtual, but does look real, for it is created to approach the reality. as for virtually, i figure it can be seen as a synonym for practically, almost.
