ISSUE55------Competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education

WORD:503   TIME:未计时

When it comes to education, the majority of people believe that high grades equates with high quality of learning. But is it really the case? There is a general debate on the campus today over the phenomenon. The information I’ve collected these years leads me to believe that competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education, for the following reasons:
Firstly, over-competition is counterproductive to learning. To be sure, appropriate competition among students could inspire them with greater efforts. But the over-competition put enormous pressure on students and makes a detrimental effect on their somatopsychic development. Students in some Asian country as china have reduced to being learning machine. The competitions for grades push them hard, and they would have to memorize tons of material so that they can score in the exam. All of them have to struggle to time, struggle to health, struggle to energy and immerse themselves in large amounts of exercises. Sticking to scores makes them have insufficient spare time to develop their interests and potentials. In our country, there is a growing tendency for parents to ask their children to accept extra educational programs over the recent years. From psychological aspect, many children seem to tend to have an unfavorable attitude toward additional educational activities. Nevertheless, they would have less time to communicate with their peers due to extra studies. It is harmful to cultivate their interpersonal skills.
Secondly, leaning is more than grades. It must be noted that learning involves practice. Just as Bernard Shaw said “Activity is the only road to knowledge.” Students, overburdened by scheduled tasks, fail in applying theory to practice. It is not uncommon for us to see the students with high scores but low abilities. Einstein's scores was not the best in his class, but he achieved greater success than his classmate did. So scores should not be taken as the only measure to learning ability. Therefore, a multi-evaluation which includes practical ability and innovation ability must be taken to evaluate the students’ study condition. For me, I really appreciate the American ways of learning. They focus on practice but high scores. Their admission to college depends on their overall ability but the grades of college entrance examination.
Thirdly, education is a lifetime study. As an old saying goes, you are not too old to study. Even if we graduate from school, learning would accompany with us throughout our lives. What can we use to evaluate ourselves? Until then competition for high grades would not exist any longer. In this case, we may be unable to evaluate ourselves and do not have motivation for progress.
From what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that our educational system leaves something to be desired, especially the scoring system. Burdened examinations would be boost to the over-competition and obstacle to the high quality of learning. We should spare no efforts to improve the education system and bring home to people the value of learning.
