题目:ARGUMENT147 - The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.

"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

提纲:
1. 错误的认为新的游戏能挽救下滑的销量。
2. 错误的认为新游戏的广告策略会吸引更多的玩家去购买。
3. 没有调查人群的信息,只说有人被调查了,这样的调查不可信。
The editorial's author concludes that Whirlwind's video games sales trend is about to reversed and likely to reverse dramatically in the next few months. To bolster this conclusion the editorial cites a recent survey in which the video game players are proved to prefer games with lifelike graphics that require the most up-to-date computers. It is also cited that Whirlwind has just introduced several such games along with an extensive advertising campaign pointed people 10 to 25 years old among which people are demographically the most likely to play video games. However, the argument is problematic in several critical respects.

Firstly, the arguer's conclusion is based on an unconvincing logic that Whirlwind's newly introduced games will be the key of the reversing of its video-game sales. Perhaps Whirlwind's poor management has to take the crucial responsibility of the declining video-games sales which has obviously not been improved. Perhaps the decline is due to Whirlwind's. Therefore, a new type of production will not seem to save Whirlwind's depressing sales. Moreover, due to the new video games’ highly required computer configurations, not all video game players are able to afford such an expensive cost.

Secondly, the editorial’s prediction is based on another unpersuasive logic that the extensive advertising campaign aimed at 10-25 year-olds will help to attract more video game players to buy Whirlwind’s new products which-according to the survey -are preferred by a age-group without any specifying. Therefore, perhaps some 30 year olds who should love these new video games can not be attracted by the advertisements, because the advertisements are not suit their appetite and then they lose interests of those new games.

Additionally, the survey cited in the editorial is unconvincing to me without its respondents’ any specified information. If the survey is taken on the Internet, then the group of respondents is not representative because it is the group who play computer games, not video games. Or if the survey is taken on a video-game fair, then the group of respondents is not representative either due to its lower number compared to the whole group of video game players.

In sum, the arguer’s prediction that Whirlwind’s sales are about to reverse and then dramatically increase in the next few months is ill-conceived and poorly supported. To lend credibility to this editorial the arguer should provide evidence that Whirlwind’s problem can be solved by just the new type of video game, and that the survey’s respondent group is representative.
