  Issue2

I am inclined to support the idea that competition is not only beneficial to individuals but also important to society.
Competition is a way of life in modern time. First and foremost, individuals compose society and competition is the essential driving force of each individual. So we must have a full energy to welcome it. We need continuous improvement at a rate exceeding our competitors. We can compare with our competitors from many aspects, capability, experience, emotion and so on. Or ask ourselves that are they better than I am? what difference between they and I? what does it come from?what is my shortcoming?how can I improve myself?what can I learn from my competitors? Such thoughts urge us to re-evaluate others and ourselves for improvement. Secondly, competition should come from pressure that manifests ambition for knowledge and development. Just as the Chinese old saying goes” we should change the stress into energy.” If expecting   a football match, we should certainly exercise, analyze the opponent’s advantage and disadvantage and try to benefit from these. Naturally, the heavier the pressure of competition, the greater the subsequent improvement.
Society likewise benefits from such competition, especially in the economic. For instance, China has certainly the experienced the vitality of this competition in the past decade since her adoption of the” Reform and Opening up” policy and then enter into the WTO. A number of foreign companies come into China to compete with Chinese’s in product and service. Facing the keen competition, Chinese companies may produce high-quality products and provide perfect service. We can buy a lot of cheaper, high-quality products and get some benefits form the competitiveness. If without the competition, we may lose ambition, emotion or our dream and the society is not full of prosperousness.
We pay more attention to the benefits, however, we do not neglect the negative campaigning that can only lead to a harmful, downward society trend. Many competitors so seek fame and wealth that give up civilization, kind, loyalty even human instinct. So it is crucial for competitors to keep in mind that the ultimate outcome of competition is self improvement.
2.The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners
from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.
"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set
of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what
colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average
property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property
values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on
landscaping and housepainting."

In this letter, the committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres suggest that in order to increase Deerhaven property values should imitate the Brookville community to adopt a set of restrictions on landscaping and house painting. Is the only way to enhance Deerhaven property values? This argument provides no evidence to persuade the reason for its predominance.

The first unsubstantial assumption is that only do we carry out this policy, the Deerhaven values have a high risen-room. The Deerhaven property values are relevant to the environment, excellent communication and commerce. If ordering to enhance a community’s value, we only improve the landscape and house painting that can lead to none of the cheap place in the city. Accordingly, the committee cannot draw any firm conclusion about what effect similar restrictions would have on Deerhaven property values.

Even assumption that the Deerhaven’s committee support the recommendation which happened before seven years. We do not ensure that all person should like the color and whether the color in true fashionable now. Perhaps, the demanding for the house in the Brookville have increased due to the custom and service, or it is possible that the Brookville’s community has a supermarket, kindergarten and other common equipment. So we do not rest on a battery of unsubstantiated assumptions to judge it stands.

The major problem with the argument is that the similarities between Brookville and Deerhaven are insufficient to support the conclusion the Deerhaven will suffer a rate similar to Brookville. We do not make this decision according to the Brookville’s project because do not ignore the difference between them. It is possible that Deerhaven is far from the centre of the city or the home-owners are not interested in it. For that matter, without accounting for these and other possible dissimilarities, the committee cannot assume that what resulted in rising property values in Brookville would bring about the same result in Deerhaven and these restrictions are not feasible.

Consequently, unless the committee of Deerhaven can demonstrate that the restriction can cover by the profit from the Deerhaven, the committee concern about the issue is unfounded. No evidence persuade this explanation is right.
