The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
'Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores.'

The business manager of Valu-Mart stores has put forward a proposal in his memo suggested that all the Valu-Mart stores should enlarge their stocks of office machines and supplies. With this perspective, the manager presented several reasons which he considered that would bolster his position. Whereas, to my viewpoint, the suggestions proposed are, to some extent, more or less unprevailing and obtrusive.

As the preconditions are given that the survey that was taken show a percentage of 70% of respondents announced that they were to have more work brought home after working hours, the manager is too anxious to conclude that there should be a trend that more official works will be taken at home. Since the main sample group has not been clearly stated about what kind of people they chose to collect the questionnaires, or rather whether the whole answers were generated from a certain company that its employees were suffering from a throughout company overtime works periodically, or even people might not take this investigation seriously but to complain about the boring works, to make a decision according to such data should be susceptible.

With a so-called prerequisite, the manger then proposed that the whole Valu-Mart stores should divert there stocks with more stocks of official-use, as the trend of more works are being brought home. As it is clearly announced, the manager thus treated the data collected from a certain sample district into a stores-wide opportunity of the profit gaining, which could obviously be atoned to be too abruptly. Considering whether some stores of Valu-Mart have already posited their sales emphasized on the official stocks, this suggestion would be somewhat an invalid one? Treat according to the very status should ever be recommended and catered for, whenever it is to the commercial activities or so.

If taken a deeper thought of the suggestions given by the manager, several flaws could then be uncovered. Though there may be a trend that people are forced to bring more work home under a big pressure, whether the official machines or official stocks are needed is unclear. Maybe this trend is a temporary phenomenon? Or else, the works taken home could simply be carried on by using computers only, that either printer or paper would be of no use.

Even though all consideration could be accepted, too hurried to enlarge the stocks of official stocks should conduct a negative impact on the whole Valu-Mart stores, rather than bring a profit winning ending. As the profit is somehow associated with a serious aspect, such as the quality and price of goods, the preferences and requirements of customers, and even the competitions among the malls, etc., the manager's claim that the changes "... will become the most profitable component of our stores" is both ill-considered and incomprehensive.

Thus, to put forward a practical proposal about the Valu-Mart stores lately sales, the manager should proceed a more precise and comprehensive survey with each of the flaws pointed out above, i.e. the sample should be chosen with all aspects taken into considerations, like the jobs background, people's age range and even the preferences of working places together with a certain stores sales records. As a matter of fact, only with which the data are well focused and explicitly presented, should a more persuasive and effective scheme would be accepted.
