Issue 185:Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
Words:642 Time:未限制
With the development of information, scandals in modern world are becoming so hard to be hidden from the media and the public view whether in politics, academia, or other areas. Here comes the question that whether or not the scandals are useful. Generally I agree with the speaker that scandals can sometimes expose problems that the community and the society should pay attention to, and they focus people’s attention in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. However, too much attention paid to scandals may risk influencing the society in negative ways.
It is true that scandals, in many cases, can serve to reveal problems and attract people’s attention that we would otherwise neglect. In these years, more and more scandals in sports, football games for example, have been reported, calling the public attention to such things as the umpires whistling unfairly for a foul on purpose, the players losing games for money and so on,which destroyed the spirits of sports seriously. But in retrospect, the exposure of those scandals improved the legal system of fairness and alerted the public figures to care for their own behaviors, thereby working a significant and lasting benefit to our society. Not only in the area of sports but also in the political and academic areas that there are scandals. As far as we know, the paradigmatic modern examples in the area of politics may be the Watergate scandal and the Clinton sex scandal. It has been proved that these scandals did improve the level of scrutiny and the efficiency of the legal system to some extent. Surely, no speaker or reformers could have ever exposed these facts as scandals did for the reason that they have to take care of their public reputations and legal responsibilities. Without scandals, these could probably been hidden forever and keep harmful to the society as hidden rules.
While scandals serve us to call our attention to certain issues in different areas, sometimes they also make us confused and overemphasize their fault, treating their contribution unfairly. Scandals could do harm to privy C seriously. Whether a person makes more mistakes than contribution to the community or the society depends on a case-by-case basis. We cannot deny a person just according to the scandal about him. So we should establish the facts relating to them, instead of believing blindly in the reports about these scandals, before making any judgment.
Moreover, too much attention paid to scandals may risk distracting us from the mainstream events and the more pressing societal problems. One apt illustration of this point involves the French political scandal which led to the societal turbulence for 12 years. French people suffered a bloodless civil war from the event that the chief captain judged another Judaic Captain Alfred high treason arbitrarily in 1894. Every new development during that political scandal became front-page news in all of the Paris Newspapers. But did this scandal serve any useful purpose? No. In contrast, the scandal distracted the French people from far more important issues, such as economic depression and political disorder. And people in France suffered really a lot in those years.
In addition, some people may make use of scandals to buck for benefit from them. Driven by the profit, some owners and managers of media will try their best to seek every facet of the scandal or even make up some stories, for the purpose of attracting the widest viewing audience. Also vending scandals can bring enormous benefit, which appeals to some wildcatters to do business in them, thus vicious circle is made.
In the final analysis, scandals do expose some problems that we may otherwise neglect and alert the public figures to improve their behaviors. However, when faced with scandals, we should take care of them reasonably because scandals could sometimes work harm to society as well.
