TOPIC: ISSUE160 - "The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."
WORDS: 432 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2007-11-24 11:18:26
POSITION: PARTLY AGREE
I partly agree with the speaker's assertion. Admittedly, most of the time, a solid principle and a consistency objective is indispensible to any leaders. Yet I still insist that whether they should consistently stick to their principle and objectives is largely decided by whether their principles or ideas can bring about optimal benefit to most of the populace in the long run.
For one thing, to discuss the issue, the perception of "effective leader" must take into consideration in the first place. Though few can define this term accurately, the common sense that a "effective leader" is the one who feed with tax from citizens and feed them back effective management which is widely accepted. Therefore, such features granted that their characteristic of sticking to his/her belief can make the public trust in his/her ability of fulfill these political presumptions. Some times, it is leader's persistence to their goals which make the society a better place to live which eventually win veneration from populace. A common but illustrative example is the Martin Luther King. In the process of ethical free and democratic reform of the society, though there's all kind of obstacles and objections from society, Luther King never giving up his beliefs and eventually won the respect of all who in advocating of the democracy. I have a dream can still revokes in my ears which stimulate so many people being evolved in the objection system. Doubtlessly, Luther's personal principle and charisma serves as catalyst for his success.
For another thing, it is obvious that frequent shifts and oscillation his/her beliefs to the public can bare nothing but futileness. Considering some differences within the public, such as ethos, culture, social classes, religion, it is difficult and probably impossible for any politic to meet the needs of all the people within society. What leaders should bear in mind is to keep open their mind to the public, and what is more important is, to stick his/her own principles and objectives that he/she believes can benefit the society the most. Einstein once said, "Politics is much more difficult than physics". And this is especially true in the very case here, for politics is a paradox: it tells leaders to accept opinions from populace in order to service them better, but it seldom allow leaders to accomplish all of them willfully and arbitrarily without some unchangeable principles. In order to out of this dilemma, leaders should always judicious enough when the belief that they adhering is out of date or can not represent the optimal benefit of society and in the worst situation brings deterioration to society.
What's more, categorically sticking to one's principles or objectives is also harmful and some times can even bring disaster to societies or nations. One case in point is the World War II. As we all know, Adolf Hitler win the trust of Germany people in 1930, making people all through the nation believe that Germany need to devour the land from other countries, by his ability of strong agitation. However, what the result turns out is that people all over the world was brought to the abyss of World War II. This illustrates the point that sticking to one's principles or objectives should have some prerequisite, as what I have stated in the beginning, that is what he advocating is derive from not only the benefit of his populace but also the people all over the world, as well as the future of the whole planet.
Finally, compared to the common citizens, leaders obviously should possess a higher caliber as I have mentioned in the first paragraph. However, at the same time, leader is all the same to all of us physically and mentally. Therefore, It is absurd to require leaders to always make absolute right decisions before society are about to follow it. By listening to the opinion of the populace, those in charge with the government will know what's the problem persist and what's the unreasonable routine that they followed. Trying to solve these problems, they will manage to service society better, people in turn will also cherish these reforms that coincide with their opinions. The procedure of reciprocity can dismiss discord, reconcile or consolidate social harmony which will benefit every one directly living there. |
