The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little.

Should the leader stick to a particular principles or shift according to prevalent opinion to be effective? From my standpoint, the most essential quality of an effective leader is neither the capacities to insist on specific objectives nor the tendency to follow the prevail trends without question. But the one who could strike a balance with the two should embrace the most essential quality.

On the one hand, I largely agree with the author that leader who obeys the authorities or popular views without hesitation or consideration could achieve little. As common sense informs me, fashionable opinions are undergoing quick and frequent changes, remarkably influenced by the breakneck speed of information transmission with sophisticated modern technologies. Hence, if the leaders tend to obey the trends and change the objectives or plans immediately, it is likely that countless amounts of resources, funds and labors which have been devoted to the previous plans would be in vain since the plans are abandoned before accomplishment. Worse still, the majority of the group members or citizens has insufficient access to some crucial information --- perhaps due to political reasons or market factors to preserving the advantages in the fierce competition or national confidentialities. Hence, the popular views held by the majority might be misleading and once the leaders follow the trends without any consideration or reflection, the losses to the group or nation might go beyond one's imagination.

On the other hand, it hardly suffices to become an effective leader by insisting consistently on specific principles or objectives. To begin with, as the 21st centuries have witness breakneck changes into every field of social lives, the principles or objectives which used to be fitted to the previous circumstance, would become obsolete soon in the background of current situation. Therefore, the principles and objectives should be updated in time so that the work of the groups or nations could effectively keep abreast with the changing environment. By contrast, if the leaders refuse any update to their fixed objectives, the effectiveness of the leadership would fade away since even accomplished successfully, the achievement might have lagged behind of the times. Additionally, it calls for qualities to obtain the support of the members by concerning with their opinions provided that one attempts to become a truly effective leader. The leaders' principles and objectives could hardly be corrected or manage to refer to the interest and willingness of the members thus certain extent of modification is required before the leaders could fix out a truly effective and plausible objectives. The refusal to modification would offset one's endeavor to become an effective leader.

For that matter, the most essential quality for effective leaders should be the abilities to pose the principles and objectives through reasonable consensus to the members' suggestions and to make necessary modification abreast with the changes of situation. First, certain extent of reasonable consensus with the members could not only correct the flaws in the objectives but also make sound judgment to resolve the contradicting interest among the member. And with part of their ideas included in the group objectives, the members could development a sense of participation and work far harder and devotedly for the team. Second, updates of the plans ensure the achievements would be profitable even in the new circumstance, as a key standard to demonstrate the effectiveness of the leadership. Last but not least, the effective leaders also insist to accomplish the objectives and follow the plans to the last minute or the effort, funds and labors would be wasted as a result of the unreasonable ceases.

In sum, the effective leaders contain the most crucial capacity to set up a logical principles and objectives including reasonable consensus with the views of the members. Moreover, although it is unwise to change the principles and objectives frequently without consideration, the effective leaders also embrace the quality to ponder the necessity of changes according to the last development but must carry on the plan to the end.

Additionally, it calls for qualities to obtain the support of the members by concerning with their opinions provided that one attempts to become a truly effective leader. Theme 是要说明领导与坚持原则的问题,你的first opinion说明了无原则的坏处,如果在first opinion中先说明下坚持原则的好处,再说不The harmfulness of listen to the popular opinions;感觉顺畅些.
你在first opinion与last opinion中同用了resources wasting ,觉得在last opinion中可以说明为什么要听取民众之声.比喻有利于当选,了解他们所关心的 and so forth.
