5、"A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer."
I agree with the speaker on the basis that all students, without regarding which part of the nation they live, are required to know some universal knowledge and beliefs. However, concerning about individual’s interest and needs of the students from different parts of the nation, local curriculums are also required to serve as a complement.
To begin with, no one can deny that all students should know some universal knowledge in their life. For instance, why is ice cold but fire is hot? How can not a bird fly without wings? With knowledge, we can know how the world where we live goes around. Accordingly, courses about basic knowledge in maths, physicals and chemistry are needed. Moreover, for a nation as a whole, it is necessary to cultivate its masters to be with some basic beliefs, values, such as the sense of responsibility, peace, collaboration, courage and so on. As a result, they will have the sense to devote themselves to the construction of the nation in future. Neither a person devoid of common sense nor a person lacking sense of what is right and just will serve the nation well. Therefore, a nation must offer some nationwide compulsory courses for all students all around the nation.
In the second place, it is necessary for a nation to offer unified courses to keep the students living in remote areas of the nation up with the time. There is no doubt that local officials are not skilled to set curriculum. What is worse, students may be misled by local courses provided by local schools and they are possibly to grow into narrow-minded persons. Common sense tells us that in an era of Village of Earth, a nation avoid learning from others can make little progress in economy, politics and culture, let alone a person limited in perspective. Accordingly, a nation should and must offer some elementary courses about history, politics, geography etc. to broader students’ perspective. With such courses, they can better regard themselves as a part of the nation as a whole, and the pride of the nation’s history will help them to formulate a better outlook on life and spirit of sacrifice and dedication.
However, curriculums about local history, customs and other courses are required to meet individual interests and needs. To offer courses about local history, many local stories of ancestors can be handed down from one generation to another, and many special local customs can be kept up. Moreover, courses of all fields should be available to all students so that they can contact all of them and know which attract them more, hence they can make correct choice when they enter colleges.
In summary, whether a nation should provide a unified curriculum for all its students depends on the benefits of the students and the nation as a whole. I suggest that a nation offer some compulsory courses and the local schools provided some local courses as complements. only in this way, the purpose of education can be well achieved.
