The speaker asserts that technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics. However, there is an argument against the speaker’s assertion matter how technologies develop, social customs and ethics will maintain over time. As a my own view, I agree with the speaker that technologies play an important role in influencing and determining customs and ethics.

To begin with, with the development of technologies, the ways of transportation, communication have changed. Before car was invented, if there were no waterway available, people often had to walk for a couple of months from one place to another. Today, With the help of cars, buses, railways, planes, we can get to any place in a relative short time today. Thanks to the development of technologies, or else we are still confined in a narrow world, let alone contact with people from all over the world. The progress in technologies also improves the communication among people. With the arrival of the online era, the time when people send a hand mail to communicate with each other has gone. Such customs, which are relating to people’s everyday life, are influenced a lot by the enhancement of technologies.

In the second place, technologies act as a crucial role in the change of ethics. Take family for example, in tool age, due to adverse natural conditions and the low level of technology, our ancestors had to live in extended families to protect them from the attack from animals. In such extended families, both the fealty to eldership and the loving-kindness to the junior were regarded as most important virtues. When faced with attack from outside, such virtues as courage, bravery were often required to survive. However, young people in today are usually brought up in nuclear families. What they care most is responsibility, duty, and fairness, which play an important part in the communication and cooperation with others. Moreover, the development of technologies causes material abundance, hence provides people with more free choices. For example, when people consider whether to divorce or not, the condition of material is no longer a factor which influences their decisions because a single mother will not worried about such problems such as how to bring up a her child without the financial support from his husband. Under this condition, people’s attitude toward marriage and divorce has changed.

However, there also exist some traditional customs and basic ethics maintain without regarding to the development of technologies. Such as principles of right and wrong, Ten commandments, Golden Rules. As we all know, before give evidence, the witness have to take an oath. That is to say, the virtue such as honesty, justice can also guide behavior in nowadays, although thousands of years have past. Moreover, the customs in festival are keep the same as ever before, for example, thanksgiving’s day has been being a day for family reunion and eating turkey. And from one generation to another, people seldom forget to spend a romantic day with their lovers in Saint Valentine’s Day.

According to the discussing above, technologies have exerted major influences in people’s customs and ethics. However, many basic moral principles and traditional customs, which are handed down from one generation to another, can hardly be influenced by the progress of technologies.
