Does competition limits the quality of learning at all levels of education even for high grades? The speaker claims so, for reason that competition can cause stress and inhabit learning. I concede that undue competition can impede various
dimensions of learning. Otherwise, in my view we learn more effective and accurate under situation of competition
rather than without competition.
Actually, competition is a way of life in today's world. The capitalist society encourage competition. Companies, for the
sake of survival in competition, must continue to improve their services, and as a result, the entire society prospers, at
least economically. We witness competition not only in business alone. Competition appear in many forms such as
learning as the speaker's description.Moderate competition, also can be called positive competition, can promote students' motivation to study hard. The nature of students who suffered from continuous learning stress changed from ambitious
to lazy. It need something to stimulate it,and competition,as a catalyst, can play an improtant role in hastening it.A good case in supporting this points is American school's competition method. In innumerable ways children are pitted against each other-whether in classroom discussion, spelling bees, reading groups, or tests.Every classroom is expected to
produce a scattering of A's and F's. When it comes to the top marks, students are aware that they must try their best,
and can fulfill themeself as a student.
However, considering the aspect of other levels of education improment, over-competition for high grades is harmful to student. Francis Bacon, British philosopher, once said "Histories make men wise, poems witty, the mathematics, natural philosophy deep, moral grave, logic and rhetoric able to contend." The saying is used to point that we should try to learn various of subjects as possible as you can rather than focus on one, and do not competition for one subject's high grades. Also, I have to emphasize the basis target of genuious education which need us shift away from the traditional
education. In the past, even recently, the high grades is the only way to judge a student whether useful or not.Consider, for example, a student is interested in the field of math but he have to get enough marks from text book which is limited his horzion. He or she have to pass it with competition method, while his indepentent thinking and creativity is
murdered. When broad range of knowledge is reduced to a text paper, we shall see the over-competition, corresponding also can be called negative competition, begining to encroach into our mind.
In sum, life isn't pure competition, if it were, the stress would kill us at an early ege. It is only if we treat the competition rationally that we will enjoy a nice life. |
